Mission Statement
We serve our community through creating inspiring, accessible theater and bringing it to as wide an audience as possible. The Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival is one of our biggest programs, providing 40 FREE performances of classical plays in the summer for our community. Outside of the summer Festival, ISC continues to create in our Studio, located in Atwater Village a few miles away from Griffith Park. The ISC Studio serves as a vibrant hub, showcasing innovative productions that intertwines narratives with our rich history, alongside new experimental renditions of classical works. At the Studio, we’re not only redefining theater; we’re actively engaging our audience in a dialogue about the limitless possibilities of the stage and its profound role within our community.
About This Cause
Who we are Independent Shakespeare Co. (ISC) is a unique theater company based in Los Angeles, dedicated to uniting a diverse community through the experience of classical and contemporary plays. As leaders in fostering a truly inclusive ensemble of artists and audiences, ISC passionately believes that shared theatrical experiences build a stronger, more joyful, and more connected community. Guiding Principle ISC's work is deeply rooted in the profound humanity of Shakespeare’s writing, aiming to reveal the universal aspects of the human experience. Mission ISC's mission is to bring the people of Los Angeles together through vibrant, unexpected productions of classical plays and new works. They address inequities in access to the performing arts by offering free and low-cost programming. ISC creates dynamic, inclusive, and accessible theater, enriching the community and attracting new theater audiences. They are dedicated to envisioning Los Angeles as a leading city in theater creation, where participating in the arts is a vital part of being an Angeleno, and where access to the arts is available to everyone. Core Operating Values - Community Gathering: ISC's theater is a place for the entire community to come together. - Audience Respect: They start with the belief that their audience is smart, discerning, and extraordinary. - Equity of Access: Ensuring access for all audiences and artists is a priority. - Diversity and Inclusion: ISC fosters diversity in both their audience and artistic ensemble, holding inclusion as a top value. - Audience Enjoyment: Performances are created with the audience's enjoyment and satisfaction as a paramount goal. - Artistic Relationships: ISC seeks long-term, deep relationships with artists. - Creative Storytelling: They value creative storytelling and clarity of language over the technical aspects of contemporary theater. - Collaboration: Emphasizing collaboration in the act of theater making is essential to ISC. What we are known for The Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival, an annual summer tradition for all of Los Angeles to come together and enjoy a creatively cultivated season of Shakespeare Productions entirely for FREE! The Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival continues to be our largest program. The Festival includes Players in the Park, a free, pre-show workshops for families, a Salon Series: Conversations with Directors, Artists and more, and our successful Community Engagement Events, wherein we invite local performing arts groups, Community Leaders, and Community Groups to use our stage for free pre-show events, including music, dance, and variety-style performances.
