Mission Statement
Our mission: Movement Strategy Center (MSC) provides values-aligned, holistic intermediary services enabling access to crucial infrastructure and thought partnership for BIPOC, women, and LGBTQIA movement leaders, activists, and communities challenging intersectional issues of systemic racism, rampant environmental destruction, and crippling economic exploitation. We are unique in that we do not operate as a singular organization but as a collective ecosystem incubating and accelerating the work of our partner projects, which speaks to our values of radical interdependence and love. Our vision is of a Just Transition from a world of domination, extraction, and violence — where the few live at the expense of the many — to a world of interdependence, liberation, and resilience — where the many govern for the benefit of all. We understand that a Just Transition is only possible when the voices of BIPOC, women, and GNC leaders are honored, celebrated, and amplified, not merely tolerated.
About This Cause
Since 2001, MSC has fought for climate justice and racial equity by supporting BIPOC, women, and LGBTQIA-led activist organizations with operational services, tools, and thought partnership. We were founded by activists, so we really get it: we have strong relationships with underserved communities, we speak their language, and we are proudly values-aligned with our partners. Our support enables the work of over 30 groups who are tackling social justice causes — work centering on racial, gender, and environmental inequities. So many movement leaders, the very people capable of the solutions we need, are hobbled by institutional racism, a lack of funding and networking opportunities, and a dearth of basic technological, financial, and human resources services. What’s at stake here is a generation of social justice activists without the infrastructure they need to improve the lives of their communities. MSC’s activist partners do have the support they need to work, everyday, on transformational, roots-up projects; and those of us at MSC are pushing, everyday, to shift philanthropy at large away from incremental or temporary solutions and shine a light on the industry’s deeply ingrained cultural blinders and racial disparities. Our partners are doing absolutely crucial work in decarceration, health and housing equity, leadership building, clean energy, cultural strategy, food security, economic justice, education, public policy, and community-driven planning; and the organizations we’ve worked with over the years have had a hand in Standing Rock, the People’s Climate March, and the Green New Deal.
