Mission Statement
Our mission is to empower social justice in greater St. Louis through immersive learning and empathy building, rooted in the strengths of the Black and Jewish experiences. LEAD STL works to bridge divides and build relationships among young people who want to create positive change in their communities and beyond. We provide tools necessary to create systemic change, promising a brighter future for our region.
About This Cause
LEAD STL works to eradicate oppression in a divisive world by: developing leaders and changemakers; connecting youth via immersive educational programming; building cross-cultural understanding through humility; and welcoming diverse allies and partners. We celebrate diverse perspectives and highlight the experiences of marginalized groups, broadening the worldviews of our participants and deepening their empathy. Our age-appropriate curriculum is educational and evokes a sense of responsibility that participants carry with them in their everyday lives. We focus on resilience and unity, and we equip students with tools to find common ground with people of all backgrounds. LEAD STL currently operates Core Programming, which is stand-alone cohorts where students come to us, and External Programming, which is push-in programming, primarily taking place on-site during the school day/week. Programs are: 1) our year-round high school leadership program—known as The Cultural Leadership Experience—for 10th-11th grade students; 2) Camp LEAD over the summer for students in grades 5-9; 3) our Emerging Changemakers Program year-round for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students; and 4) our External Programs, consisting of Cross-District Partnerships, Informative Workshops and Courageous Conversations serving students in partnering schools. We grew our capacity and program partnerships immensely during 2023, now serving over 300 youth from the St. Louis Metropolitan area across all programming. This is a significant increase over 2022, when we served 50 students across all programs. As part of our rebranding and recent growth, we are also enhancing, strengthening, and broadening our curriculum to include topics such as anti-bullying, environmental justice, Activism through Art, and financial literacy alongside our economic inequity curriculum. In 2024, we will relaunch our Summer Internship Program, open to students in 12th grade through college seniors. Within this program, we will provide leadership training and networking opportunities with local companies with the goal of retaining diverse talent in St. Louis.
