About This Cause
Common Future is an intermediary that is working with Black, Indigenous and other leaders of color for building a new economy to support closing the racial wealth gap. Our approach enables us to have the flexibility, agency, and choice to invest in and uplift the people and models that we know work, but that are often underinvested in due to a variety of barriers. Our strategy works in deep co-creation and alignment with community leaders, centered on the following three pillars: Change Capital Flows: We invest in models that are challenging the standard notions of risk and wealth primacy to demonstrate the promise of community-led solutions. Build Power & Influence: We build economic power to financially and strategically back organizations, connecting them to a broader ecosystem to develop and pursue collective goals like policy and narrative change. Create New Narratives: We use our work as evidence to counter harmful narratives and tell new stories that center the power of Black and Indigenous communities and demonstrate how a more equitable economy is possible. Today, our network of leaders, partners, and grantees spans over 100 communities across the United States working together towards a more equitable economy. Since 2001, we’ve elevated the solutions of more than 300 community wealth-building organizations and local economy leaders across the country and shifted $280 million from Wall Street funds into mainstreet investments with BIPOC communities toward building power. Adding to this, our acquisition of Community Credit Lab in 2022 has created an investment vehicle through which we can provide catalytic investment capital to emerging funds and lending programs for shifting power. These investments have created spaces for leaders from community-rooted organizations to make decisions on how economic solutions are implemented in their own communities and enabled Common Future to be a facilitator in helping decision makers craft new financial instruments and policies through the lens of a restorative economy.
