Mission Statement

Rio Grande Food Project (RGFP) envisions a world where every person has plentiful, nutritious food. Our mission is to alleviate hunger and cultivate long-term food security in our communities. RGFP is the second largest food pantry in Albuquerque, and provides low-income families and individuals with groceries as often as once a week. In 2023, an average of 830 individuals, including children and seniors visited us for food assistance every week. Our main focus is to alleviate the devastating effects of hunger, but we also work to maximize household incomes to address long-term food security through our Community Hub. This on-site and virtual hub provides electric and water bill assistance, and other critical resources to address a wide array of issues that could limit one's access to basic nutrition needs. Our Urban Garden is a communal space where we grow the freshest food to help supplement our food boxes and we invite anyone interested to join us and learn beside us.

About This Cause

RGFP understands that emergency food assistance is critical, so we distribute food 3x week throughout the year and individuals and families can visit once per week. This food includes canned non-perishables, along with any meat, dairy, bread, and fresh produce that varies weekly. RGFP also understands the many factors that lead someone to visit a food pantry must be addressed to achieve long-term food security for individuals and families. Our Community Hub addresses many issues that people face that can lead to poverty and food insecurity. We provide community resources onsite for our clients to connect with opportunities including electric and water utility bill assistance, supplemental insurance, mental health resources, job fair info & skills training referrals, emergency cell phone services, and free books for kids. RGFP also offers financial literacy classes and information through our partnership with a local credit union as of 2024. In June 2023, we doubled the size of our Urban Garden to enable us to grow more fresh fruits and vegetables on-site. RGFP now has open garden hours for guests and community members to learn how to garden in collaboration with Albuquerque Master Gardeners. RGFP now offers cooking education classes through our partnership with local cooking educators. Asparagus, apples, arugula, beans, basil, beets, cucumbers, garlic, grapes, onions, peaches, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, Swiss chard, tomatoes, and zucchini are some of the crops that are grown, harvested, and immediately distributed through our food boxes during the growing season. RGFP works with local farmers to ensure our guests receive some of the freshest, healthiest, local food possible. Our yearly Hike to End Hunger event is held in late October and raises funds and awareness about hunger and food insecurity in our communities and offers individuals, families, companies, and organizations a variety of ways to get involved and help.
