Mission Statement
Vision A network of diverse statewide leaders consistently collaborating to solve Georgia’s environmental challenges. Mission IGEL facilitates leadership in collaborative problem-solving to preserve and enhance the environment in the state of Georgia.
About This Cause
More than 20 years ago, an advisory committee came together to forge a new way to address environmental issues in Georgia. The idea was to build a collaborative network of knowledgeable leaders, people from all sectors and every region of the state, to create solutions as an alternative to divisive debates and lawsuits. From that inspiration, IGEL was born in 2001, and in 2004, IGEL, Inc., was formed to act as the program’s governing body. At the core of the IGEL mission is our immersive leadership development program – a rigorous, year-long experience that brings together a diverse group of leaders to explore and grow together. IGEL conducts annually a world-class leadership program for about 30 participants from all over Georgia, which includes invaluable, immersive environmental learning, and outdoor experiences. The program include participants that are diverse in multiple respects—by race, sex and gender identification; representing all geographic areas of Georgia; and from multiple sectors, including industry, government, law, consulting and non-profits. The program explores varied geographic locations—south Georgia, the north Georgia mountains, Columbus, the Georgia Coast, and metro Atlanta. To date, more than 600 environmental leaders – including leaders from academia, industry, government, and civic organizations—have gone through the IGEL program. After graduation, alumni put their new skills and training to work, addressing environmental challenges, often hand-in-hand with fellow IGELians. Today, the organization is investing in engagement beyond the core leadership program, with tools and communications to develop more engaged communities of practice, to support Georgia’s environmental leaders continue to work together to create a brighter future for our state.
