Mission Statement
Established in 2003 - Performs surgeries in Sierra Leone West Africa on vesicovaginal fistulas that result from complicated deliveries. These women are destitute and abandoned because they leak urine and sometimes feces out the vagina. They are provided food, shelter and education during this process - ALL FREE OF CHARGE. No Administrative cost because Doctors pay their own expenses.
About This Cause
West Africa Fistula Foundation (WAFF) was established to help the poorest of the poor. Women in Third World Countries suffer from a malady called Obstetrical Fistula (OF) which has existed throughout the history of man. This condition arises as a result of obstructed labor that generally lasts for days therefore the baby's head becomes impacted in the pelvis. Pressure necrosis occurring in the pelvis causes a hole (fistula) between the bladder and vagina (VVF) and sometimes between the rectum and vagina (RVF). Women will have uncontrollable leakage of urine and/or feces down their legs. These women are ostracized, destitute and outcasts as a sequelae of this condition. WAFF provides these women food, shelter, surgery and skills training to restore their dignity and rehabilitate them back into society at no cost to them. Education of the patient and prevention of this condition is of paramount importance also. WAFF has been very instrumental in Sierra Leone for this cause for almost 15 years.
