Mission Statement
American Climate Partners is an entrepreneurial nonprofit organization working since 2006 to restore the health of people, communities, and ecosystems. We design, create, and manage projects, programs, and businesses which help rural America become more resilient in the face of pollution, climate change, loss of biodiversity, and disease.
About This Cause
American Climate Partners began in 2006 as two separate non-profit organizations – Public Policy Virginia and Conserv. In 2012 they merged to become the Center for Natural Capital – with a mission to create jobs in rural areas through environmental restoration. Well, mission accomplished. In the past twelve years we have created hundreds of jobs in rural areas through restoration of over 500 river miles of riverbank and over 1,000 acres of agricultural, habitat, and lawn grasslands, all in Virginia. Realizing the increasingly important benefit of our work to improve river and terrestrial biodiversity on the climate, and after a year of deliberation, in 2022 our Board of Directors unanimously decided to change our name to American Climate Partners, signifying the unifying theme of our major programs – StreamSweepers, SoilKeepers, The Rapidan Institute, and Southern Climate Restoration Solutions. StreamSweepers is an award-winning river restoration program that helps foundations, community groups, and local governments provide jobs and economic development through the removal of plastics and solid waste from streams and rivers. In 2018, StreamSweepers completed the 4-year Rappahannock Watershed Cleanup Campaign – 140 miles of riverbed and 280 miles of riverbank, all ecologically assessed and remediated of toxic trash. Since 2017, StreamSweepers has been working on the Clinch River Cleanup Project in Southwest Virginia. After wrapping up that project in 2024, we hope to move on to a tri-state project on the tributaries of the Big Sandy River in Southwest Virginia, Southeast West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. SoilKeepers helps farmers, estate and residential landowners, homeowners' associations, and solar energy companies manage their landscapes while enhancing human health and biodiversity and restoring our climate. We specialize in grasslands management through “regenerative management” -- the restoration and maintenance of soil microbes, the liquid carbon pathway and vegetative biodiversity. We consider grasslands to include lawns, swards, meadows, pastures and hayfields. We use deep comprehensive soil chemistry, biology, and plant tissue tests synergized with remote sensing when appropriate to provide essential management data. Our work restores health to people, pets, farm animals, wildlife, and river ecosystems. Our senior contracting staff and associates team members have four year and advanced degrees in agriculture, business administration, biology, environmental science, fisheries, and biochemistry. In addition, they are USDA-NRCS service providers, certified prescribed burn managers (VDOF), certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professionals. The Rapidan Institute provides transformational shifts in Eastern rivers management through innovations in conservation, biodiversity, and climate programming. The Institute’s operational strategies include the enhancement of soil, plant, and animal biodiversity, river reconnection and whole floodplain restoration. The current focus of the Institute is the Rapidan Fish Passage Project and the goal of reconnecting the Rapidan River headwaters with the Atlantic Ocean and restoring the American Shad fishery in the upper Rapidan watershed by modifying or removing the Rapidan Mill dam in Rapidan, Virginia. Southern Climate Restoration Solutions identifies and develops natural solutions for carbon dioxide removal in the Southeast US. We believe that the landscapes of the Southeast region are uniquely suited to provide verifiable and cost-effective natural solutions to restore our climate. Our focus is on identifying, developing, encouraging, and establishing the top carbon dioxide removal solutions for different management categories, including regenerative agriculture, alternative energy, recreation, and minelands reclamation.
