Mission Statement
FLIC grows the connection, capacity and consciousness of communities to strengthen pro-immigrant power in Florida.
About This Cause
Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) is a statewide, membership-based, immigrant-led movement building organization that seeks the fair treatment of all peoples, including immigrants. We advance our mission by connecting people, raising consciousness and building capacity, so our communities can freely live, love, and labor. With 50+ organizational members and more than 100 allies, FLIC is a dynamic organization engaging a diverse social justice network that includes labor, youth, women, faith, farmworkers, and LGBTQ rights movements. Our core constituency are immigrants whose marginalization exists in the intersection of immigration status other vulnerabilities - such as being undocumented and exposed to anti-black sentiments and/or poverty. We have three main fronts of action, and our accomplishments include: 1) Love and Protection: Between 2017 and 2020, more than 260,000 people attended our “Know Your Rights” clinics throughout the state. In 2012 we prevented the for-profit Corrections Corporation of America from building a new detention center in Florida, and in 2019 we helped to close the Homestead children detention camp. We resisted the Muslin Ban and xenophobic attempts to divide us. We maintained a clear rapid response strategy against the threat of ICE raids in South FL, with monthly immigration relief screening clinics and a consolidated refugee advocacy. In 2020, we successfully pivoted our work to digital in face of Covid-19, and launched the “Essential but Excluded Fund” to provide emergency cash assistance to immigrant families excluded from government relief programs. 2) Expanding Rights and Freedoms: Over the years, FLIC’s work culminated in critical policy wins, including wage theft ordinances, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and instate college tuition for immigrant youth. We also defeated multiple anti-immigrant policies, including an Arizona SB1070 copycat. We fight family separation on multiple fronts, and we continue to seek permanent and sensible solutions for our immigrant communities. In 2019, we joined a lawsuit against SB168 (the so called anti-sanctuary law). We also have a pending Miami Detainer lawsuit (2018). In 2020, we continued to fight anti-immigrant bills during the FL Legislative Session. We also raised awareness about Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and DACA, fostered welcoming communities and promoted Climate Justice and equity with our work. 3) Long-term Power building: We developed an entire continuum of non-partisan civic engagement: from naturalization, to voter education and engagement, to growing an individual membership base. Over the years, FLIC helped more than 8,000 individuals with their naturalization application, and registered thousands of voters each year. During the 2020 election cycle we registered 47,744 voters, placed 2.1 million calls, and sent close to 460,000 text messages, engaging low-propensity voters (primarily Black and/or Latinx). Our University Without Walls program makes political education accessible to 120+ people each year, and hundreds of Floridians attend our in-person and digital events each year.
