Mission Statement
Dogs for Diabetics trains and places medical-alert assistance dogs to assist insulin dependent diabetics in identifying the onset of hypoglycemia prior to the onset of critical symptoms. The dogs, training and lifetime support are provided to D4D's clients at no charge. These dogs provide a critical and non-judgemental resource to compliment all consumer technology to support the physical, emotional and mental health of our clients. We serve clients located primarily in Northern California with our fully-accessible service dogs, but we also place Diabetes Buddy Dogs throughout California, Oregon and Washington. Prospective clients for either service dogs or diabetes buddy dogs are encouraged to contact D4D to discuss their particulars and determine if we are able to serve their needs. D4D is recognized world-wide for our research and services to the diabetic community and our unique training programs in the assistance dog world.
About This Cause
Dogs for Diabetics, Inc. (Dogs4Diabetics, D4D) is known world-wide for its ground-breaking research and development in the world of medical-alert assistance dogs. Started in 1999 as the Armstrong Project, D4D was incorporated as a California 501 (c) (3) non-profit in 2004. Located in Concord, California, D4D places medical-alert assistance dogs with insulin-dependent diabetics to alert them of an impending hypoglycemic episode. The dogs are able to identify the onset of hypoglycemia through the scent emitted by the change in blood sugar that is through the breath and sweat of the client. That pending change is identified by the dog, 15 to 30 minutes prior to being registered by a glucose meter. D4D trains the dogs and clients, and provides its continuing services to its clients over the working life of the dog at no charge to its clients. All costs are supported by our many individual , corporate and foundation donors.
