Mission Statement

Dedicated to the support of children with cancer and other chronic pediatric illnesses

About This Cause

Michael was a seventh-grade student at Hicksville Middle School when he was diagnosed with leukemia (A.L.L.) and passed away within weeks of being diagnosed. At thirteen Michael was a young man who loved life, his family and friends. He smiled a lot and was considered a peacemaker by his friends!! Michael cared more about others then he did himself. He was kind and compassionate, with a “zest” for life and a passion for lacrosse and music. Mike may not have been the best at everything but he gave it his all and never gave up. During his illness, his courage and strength were a source of inspiration to all who knew him. In his memory, the Michael Magro Foundation was founded. The foundation was established in January 2005 to honor the life of Michael, know to his friends as “Magro”. The foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization, pledging 100% of its profits. The efforts of the foundation are directed to families of children diagnosed with Cancer through the Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital and Stonybrook’s Pediatric Oncology program. In addition, the foundation supports families of children diagnosed with chronic illnesses from a variety of pediatric specialty practices. Our global efforts are expanding to Southwest Florida, Barbara’s Friends at Golisano Children’s Hospital. The Foundation has also established a scholarship fund through the Hicksville High School Scholarship program for two seniors attending college. Criteria is listed in HHS scholarship guide Our board wants to help reduce financial hardship and help ease the emotional turmoil of children diagnosed with cancer and other chronic illnesses, the foundation hopes to help defray the costs of travel and living expenses when travel away from home is necessitated for treatment. Travel and hotel expenses are significant when caring for a child away from home for weeks or months can be daunting to parents already faced with huge medical bills. Additionally, the foundation will help provide funds for transportation to chemotherapy and baby sitting expenses for families so that they can attend support group meetings or therapy. Our mission also includes providing gift cards to supermarkets, help with pharmacy co payments, and much more. The directors have put into place a means of identifying families in need of the foundations help. We will work in partnership with the pediatric staff, psychologists, social workers and case managers. Many times, the family in need may be identified in the acute care setting. Our efforts will include helping those patients and families as well. Allowing people to smile for just a moment and enjoy the small gift we can provide is a step toward healing.
