Mission Statement
The Little Manila Foundation advocates for the historic preservation of the Little Manila Historic Site in Stockton, California and provides education and leadership to revitalize our Filipina/o American community.
About This Cause
In 2002, the Little Manila Foundation was established in response to the continued plans to destroy the Little Manila neighborhood in downtown Stockton. Once home to the largest population of Filipinos in the world outside of the Philippines from the 1920's to the 1960's, much of the historic neighborhood and the neighboring communities of color were destroyed by the building of the Crosstown Freeway in the 1960's and 1970's. Of the large vibrant community of farm labor immigrants, only a few buildings remain. With the destruction of the community, much of the history of sacrifice and struggle has been lost. The effect is that present day Filipino Americans and Stocktonians are not aware of the historic contributions of this generation. One example is that most Filipino Americans and Stocktonians are not even aware of its own community's history in the farm labor movement which led to the formation of the United Farm Workers; one of the greatest social justice movements in the history of America. Little Manila Foundation is dedicated to preserve the historic site and the stories and culture surrounding it to empower our future and build upon the legacy of these first generation Filipino Americans. Our Mission: The Little Manila Foundation advocates for the historic preservation of the Little Manila Historic Site in Stockton, California and provides education and leadership to revitalize our Filipino American community. Though our beginnings as an organization started with advocating for smart growth development with respect to the poor and the history and culture of the Little Manila neighborhood; much of our effort is now spent on educating our community and the public-at-large of Little Manila and the stories and contributions of its community. Currently, we do this through our new Little Manila Center in downtown Stockton which houses artifacts from Little Manila that go as far back as the 1920's. Our programming consists of the Little Manila Dance Collective, Filipino martial arts classes, and the Little Manila After School Program (LMASP). The Little Manila Dance Collective has revived Filipino traditional and indigenous dance in our area. Its students range from five to 67 years old. Filipino martial arts classes in Escrima have instilled discipline and respect for Filipino American history and arts. LMASP, now in its eighth year, is a Filipino American history class that is open to all high school youth and is housed at Edison High School in South Stockton.
