Mission Statement
Cristo Rey Kansas City exists to provide a college and career prep education and corporate work study experience to ambitious, culturally diverse students with economic need.
About This Cause
Hope changes everything. Cristo Rey Kansas City opens the door to futures unforeseen for young people of limited economic backgrounds. To achieve their dreams, high school students at Cristo Rey commit to a longer school day and year. At graduation, they will have earned eight-and-a-half (8.5) additional academic credits and learned that the workplace is another classroom that leads to life-fulfilling possibilities. Each student wants the same thing: a college preparatory high school education, a path to and through college, and preparation for life-fulfilling work. Since opening in 2006, Cristo Rey has offered these tools and hope for a better life to economically challenged students who commit to the rigorous programs. With the school’s first graduating class in 2010 and in each successive year, 100% of its graduates achieved college acceptance. In 2014, Cristo Rey’s mission came full circle and delivered on the promise that young people of limited economic backgrounds could succeed in college or university. Starting that year, Cristo Rey marked college and university graduations of its first alumni. Overall, 59% of Cristo Rey graduates have graduated from or remain enrolled in college. Based upon national statistics, just 9-14% of low-income high school graduates achieve a college degree. In addition to Advanced Placement courses and Pre-AP courses, Cristo Rey partners with area universities to provide dual enrollment opportunities for college credit. For students with academic eligibility, earning college credit is an option. Additionally, Cristo Rey students are eligible to participate in the A+ Scholarship Program. If all requirements are met prior to graduation, students receive two years at area an community college tuition free. With the passage of time and the cycle of "diplomas, degrees and careers" repeating, Cristo Rey is seeing its young alumni - who are now college graduates - taking their places in areas business as valued employees. From teaching to health care, finance to broadcast journalism, our alumni are living proof that the method works. A Pressing Need When a generation in a high school is measured in four short years, how do you tell a 14-year-old with a head full of dreams to wait for change? Cristo Rey is the only possible option for a private, college-prep high school education for families living at or below the federal poverty line. The average annual household income for a Cristo Rey family is $33,000. Additionally, some 68% speak a language other than English in the home. In partnership with area businesses, Cristo Rey students spend one day per week in a corporate work study assignment and earn roughly one-half the cost of their own educations. Foundation support, grant programs, and individual donors contribute the difference. The average Cristo Rey family agrees to a monthly financial commitment that ranges from $10 to $30 monthly to assist with the cost of education. On the outside, Cristo Rey functions much like other high schools, providing sports, clubs and activities. On the inside, Cristo Rey commits to care of the whole person - body, mind and spirit. The school provides case management for health care needs and social-emotional counseling. Basic human services for food insecurity and personal care items is available.
