Mission Statement
Music For Everyone is a non-profit organization that exists to cultivate the power of music as an educational and community building tool in Lancaster County.
About This Cause
Music For Everyone is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and resources to strengthen the role that music plays in our schools and communities. Since 2006, MFE has awarded over $2.1 Million in grants, scholarships and direct program support to schools and community arts groups in Lancaster County. Here’s why we exist: Music is important to our community. Research shows that music education helps create strong schools and vibrant communities. Music programs are in financial trouble. Despite overwhelming evidence of their value, funding for music programs is being slashed. Music for Everyone is doing something to help. Our mission is to cultivate the power of music for education and community building. Our strategy employs three steps: 1. Consult with education and community leaders to identify and assess needs of school and community based music programs, 2. Raise community awareness of those needs and resources to address them, 3. Strategically invest those resources to effectively and efficiently address those needs. http://www.musicforeveryone.org Programs that serve the educational component of our mission include the following: Annual Grant program – MFE has provided over 12,500 instruments. We have has also provided instruments to over 60 community arts organizations, and to schools within all 17 school districts in the county. MFE in the Schools – This program aims to enhance the one on one music instruction time that students receive while in school. MFE underwrites several professional musicians to work alongside music educators and directly with students. This program reaches over 350+ students per week in the School District of Lancaster (where 96% of the students qualify for the student lunch program) and the School District of Columbia. The MFE Scholars – We provide nine $2,000 in scholarships to Millersville University music education majors. In return for their scholarships, the students serve in the School District of Lancaster as “Music Mentors”, working alongside teachers and directly with students to enhance their music education experience. The MFE Strings – The MFE Strings are an after school group of approximately 40 students, ages 8 – 17, who meet weekly and perform in public on a regular basis. Camp MFE – This is a full scholarship summer learning opportunity. This summer, 120 students attended the camps. We are focused on music education because, every issue we face - as a town, city, region, state, country or global community - whether related to healthcare, the environment, or geo-politics – in our increasingly fast paced world is becoming more complex. To successfully address those increasingly complex issues and challenges we must develop in our populace a corresponding increase in creativity. Research tells us that music is the most effective tool in our educational and community arsenal to teach creativity. Programs that serve the community building component of our mission include: Keys For The City – Since 2010, MFE has placed anywhere from 12 – 20 pianos on the streets of Lancaster. These pianos can be played 24/7 from May – September. Literally tens of thousands of magical musical moments occur around those pianos, involving people of all ages, colors, and creeds. Keys has proven to be a wonderful, community building initiative for Lancaster, PA, “The Street Piano Capital of the World”. Music Fridays – Every third Friday from May to September, MFE partners with the city of Lancaster to turn downtown into a city wide music festival. Between the street musicians that MFE underwrites, the various Keys for the City pianos, a main stage act, and the musicians performing in downtown bars and restaurants, there are over 40 different places that community members can go to enjoy free music. The MFE Community Chorus – The Chorus began with 6 members who wanted to meet for the sheer joy of singing. The Chorus is now over 80 members strong and is a community tour de force. The Chorus is non-audition and open to anyone who loves to sing. Ukulele Uprising – A community ukulele orchestra that is open to players of all ages and skill levels. They meet once a week purely for the fun of making music and building community. The Lancaster Festival of Voices – FOV is a weekend long festival that celebrates choral singing with performances and workshops open to the public. We invest in community building, because in this increasingly fast paced world, it is critical that communities invest in things that bring people together. Music’s potential and ability to bring people together and to build community is unparalleled. Finally, it is important to note that until a year ago we were an all-volunteer organization. In other words, we are a very lean organization as $0.85 of every dollar donated to MFE goes directly to our programs. While we are proud of our impact, we realize there is so much more to do. For example - last year we awarded over $100,000 in grants. However, we received requests for over $200,000. Clearly the gaps we are attempting to address are not going away anytime soon. That’s why it’s important that MFE continue to thrive.
