Mission Statement
Northern Star Council’s Scouting programs offer youth-enriching developmental experiences that emphasize learning by doing. Scouting helps young people strengthen their ability to make good decisions, take personal responsibility for their actions, develop good relationships with adult role models, set goals and achieve them, take on leadership responsibilities, develop a service ethic, and work as team members to accomplish tasks. Scouting’s focus is on developing the whole person, with opportunities for growth, success, and increased self-esteem at each age level.
About This Cause
Scouting offers the following programs: Lion Cubs: This program for Kindergarten-aged boys and girls has been highly successful. Some units used the Lion Cub program to give their first-grade Tiger Cubs an opportunity to be “teachers” for some Scout skills. Cub Scouts: In this family and neighborhood-centered program, boys and girls in 1st-5th grades meet weekly for age-specific activities in small groups, and work on award requirements at home. Cub Scouting provides youth with positive peer groups and combines fun with educational programs that teach lifelong skills and values. Scouts BSA: Boys and girls in grades 6-12 “learn by doing” in weekly youth-led meetings and monthly outings. Camping, outdoor activities, and a challenging advancement program develop self-confidence and leadership skills, and introduce boys to over 120 hobby and career choices. Lessons in teamwork, service, respect for others and ethical decision-making help prepare boys for a successful future. Youth work in gender-specific units. Venturing: This Scouting program for young men and women, ages 14-20, emphasizes leadership, team work, skills development, service, outdoor and high adventure activities, and other areas of interest to youth members. Youth plan and implement the program, with support of adult advisors and sponsoring community organizations. Exploring: Exploring is a work site-based program that provides young men and women, ages 14-20, with semi-monthly, hands-on educational opportunities to learn about career options from adult mentors who are professionals in the students’ career area of interest.
