Mission Statement
Project MuszEd provides opportunities in music and arts education with an objective of encouraging creative, personal and academic achievement. Youth served by Project MuszEd reside in communities with the least resources that will allow them to flourish. Programming is designed to support the whole child in building a pathway to higher education and career success and includes: Music L.A. - Our unique partnership with the City of Los Angele's Department of Cultural Affairs serving over 300 youth annually in sites in South and East Los Angeles. JAMM U - Programming for Middle and High School youth with multiple points of entry, supporting all levels from beginning to advanced students. Soundworks L.A. - Our workforce development program designed to educate youth ages 18-24 while providing certification in sound reinforcement and lighting.
About This Cause
Project MuszEd (PM) is a nonprofit organization community based organization serving financially under-served youth with limited or no access to music instruction and resources. PM provides comprehensive music education in the disciplines of instrumental applications, music appreciation, music theory, harmony, and performance ensembles. Since 2013, PM has been the only music based nonprofit organization in partnership with The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Free and low cost music instruction and resources are offered to approximately 300 students annually. Founded in 2004, the inspiration for Project MuszEd was fueled by PM’s founder, Charyn Harris, while serving as a music education consultant and instructor in a South Los Angeles community center. Many of the students encountered in the local youth programs demonstrated a desire to excel beyond basic music education. Many found comfort through music, as it took them away from the harsh realities of their lives. Others sought music education as a vehicle to acquire higher education and a more productive lifestyle. PM has made it a mission to ensure that youth benefit from resources in music regardless of economic challenges, providing instruction, access to instruments, visiting guest artists, field trips to culturally enriching events and more. The ultimate objective is to encourage students to set and reach higher goals and aim towards achievement whether academically, personally or professionally. The staff of the organization includes the Founder/Executive Director, Charyn Harris and Tanisha Hall, who has served as Chief Operations Officer since 2013. Independent contractors and consultants are hired on an as-needed basis. The board is active in serving as volunteers, especially in coordinating events and facilitating logistics of the programming. The organization also engages interns and volunteers, some of whom are working on acquiring community service hours for college or high school. Several former students have become involved as volunteers to help support instructional efforts. Parents have volunteered to support performance events, fundraisers as well as the logistics of instructional programming. Addressing The Need: PM addresses the need of providing constituents with an option usually reserved for families from a higher income bracket. With a poverty level defined as $20,000 for a family of four, and according to economic reports generated by the U.S. Census Bureau and The University of Northridge, approximately 48% of the population in the immediate vicinity of Project MuszEd is defined as impoverished. The ethnic breakdown of youth served by the organization is 50% African-American, 40% Latino/a, and 10% other with a gender breakdown of 60% female and 40% male. The objectives of Project MuszEd are to (1) expose youth from low-income families per year to the benefits of a comprehensive and progressive music education experience; (2) to use music education as a vehicle to bridge a critical gap encouraging increased self-esteem, personal and academic achievement; (3) to provide resources to support youth with special needs; (4) to provide youth with much needed role models of discipline and success and (5) to support youth in encouraging strategies to facilitate desired goals in higher education and professional pursuits. PM maintains associations with a variety of agencies to support the facilitation of services. Instructional and intern resources are available through Berklee College of Music’s alumni network; YOLA and The Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium provide platforms for music education advocacy and support; In-kind donations of materials are available from The D'Addario Foundation for The Performing Arts; Instruments have been donated from Robert Cauer Violins and The Guitar Center Music Foundation.
