Mission Statement
To be a transitional housing program that helps homeless families become self-supportive, self-reliant contributors to society.
About This Cause
Since 1976, Hillcrest Transitional Housing has implemented a distinctive, disciplined, and high-accountability approach to moving households from homelessness to self-sufficiency that requires residents to pursue education or maintain employment while in the program, present as drug-free from program entry to exit, and adhere to a strict all needs / no wants budget while in the program. Each Hillcrest resident meets with a case manager and budget counselor weekly. In 2024, we supported 968 households through two Youth Transitional Living Programs in Wyandotte County, Kansas and Jackson County, Missouri - serving unaccompanied homeless minors (ages 16-24) for up to 24 months - and in our Adult Transitional Living Programs (up to 90 days) in Wyandotte County and Johnson County in Kansas and in Jackson County, Missouri. Hillcrest residents receive the following at no cost: • Safe, stable, appropriate housing • Community space for study and recreation, case management meetings, life skills classes, and laundry • A comprehensive age-appropriate case management model • Access to an on-site food and toiletries pantry and Hilcrest Thrift Store vouchers Our programs center on building resilience and strengthening mental health so our program graduates may achieve and sustain self-sufficiency. We measure improved mental health with the Arizona Matrix, improved capacity for self-sustainability, and reduced stress symptoms on the Kessler 6 Distress Scale.
