Mission Statement
Womenaid provides short-term financial assistance to neighbors in need when they have nowhere else to turn.
About This Cause
Since 2005, Womenaid of Greater Portsmouth (WGP) has provided short-term financial assistance to neighbors in need when they have nowhere else to turn. We are eight volunteers, who comprise the board of directors, with no office or paid staff. This formula allows almost all the funds raised to go directly to help those in need. The lack of “red tape” or a drawn-out administrative process allows us to review each need on its own particular merit and provide an answer quickly. We work closely with, and rely on, the professional experts in the field, our community “validators”. Validators are town welfare agents, school nurses, clergy, social workers and social service agencies (such as Haven, Cross Roads House, Families First Seacoast, Rockingham Community Action, York Community Service Association, and Granite State Independent Living to name just a few). Validators are routinely faced with funding gaps, even when they utilize all their available resources. When someone is in need of urgent financial help, a validator submits a request to WGP on behalf of the individual or family through our website. The request includes details of the situation, and verifiable rationale as to why Womenaid is the best (or only remaining) option for assistance. We strive to avoid duplicating assistance offered elsewhere, and to help those who might otherwise slip through the cracks. When all board members have reviewed and approved a request, payment of up to $600.00 is made directly to the vendor (not to the individual). This ensures that money raised goes where it is intended and ensures confidentiality and anonymity are protected to the extent possible. Funds are raised through appeals to our community, grants, house parties, and special events. We usually can handle a request within 48 hours of receiving it.
