Mission Statement

Our Mission is to ignite hope and empowerment through initiating community development projects geared towards education empowerment, health care advocacy and social development in and around our community.

About This Cause

The program has been in operation since 1995 when it was founded by a group of individuals who recognized that many in the community lacked food. The Hope Center Development Corporation was established as a 501© (3) in 2006. HCDC continues to strengthen the community by providing services which will enhance their lifestyles. At the Hope Center Development Corporation (HCDC) our strength comes from the gifted leadership of our board of directors, a diverse and dedicated group of volunteers and other individuals who have a passion concerning the wellbeing of their community. We have an excellent community network and work strategically with these groups to build initiative and in many cases to partner with them to carry out our goals and objectives. Cultivating a healthy community takes a collective network of organizations and individuals working toward common goals. We serve people regardless of their age, ethnicity, religious background, gender, sexual orientation, victims of domestic violence, working poor, unemployed, residents of shelters and people in housing transition. Our goal as a community-based organization is a) to fight hunger in our surrounding communities; and b) to help people address the secondary problems that hunger presents in struggling New York City communities. Our community reflects a population that is 29% food insecure. As the pandemic receded, inflation increased, more burden was placed on members of our community already struggling with a return to work as well as child care, the elderly and paying for critical essentials such as rent, electricity, gas and food. These benefits had helped many families weather the COVID crisis. An inflatable increase in grocery food prices is causing serious problems in our low-income community. As the demand for food has increased, food donations from our partners are down and those pandemic related emergency assistance for food, shelter, rent, healthcare, childcare and other assistance has only made the problems more complex. Reduction in emergency Supplemental Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and cutbacks in other resources are some of the barriers that will prevent many in our community from accessing the healthy food they need. The migrant crises have seen many more individuals accessing our food sources. Our community struggle with poverty, unemployment, underemployment, and make the difficult decisions of placing food on the table. This is the primary need that HCDC fills in our community-reducing food insecurity. Using this basic need food program as a foundation, HCDC then works to connect food-insecure individuals and families to resources that can change their lives in the long-term.
