NORTHEAST LLAMA RESCUE AND BARNYARD SANCTUARY INC
Mission Statement
Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary, Inc and New York Wildlife Rescue work hard for the welfare of domestic camelids and other barnyard animals, as well as providing rescue and rehabilitation for local wildlife species. In addition to caring for the animals who come to us, we also engage in educational programs to enlighten the public about animal welfare and local wildlife.
About This Cause
The mission of Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary is to protect the quality of life and enhance the well-being of abused, neglected, unwanted and behaviorally unmanageable camelid, barnyard and exotic domestic species, including but not limited to llamas, alpacas and other camelids, horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, fowl and exotic domestic animals. Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary strives toward prevention, education, intervention, placement and (when required) life-long sanctuary care. In addition, Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary, also known locally as New York Wildlife Rescue Center, rescues, cares for, rehabilitates and releases when possible, injured or orphaned native wildlife. Our preventative and education activities include, for our barnyard animals: assistance with training, behavioral problems, basic care, health care and health emergencies, via telephone and email consultation; distributing educational materials; locating volunteers to assist on-site; and referral to other rescue organizations nationwide. We also make in-person presentations at local events, often bringing along tractable animals for educational display. At these demonstrations and community events, we educate the public on the prevention of cruelty to animals and provide information on the species in our care, as well as expand our contact base for potential homes, volunteers and support. The sanctuary is also open, on a by-appointment-only basis, to private tour groups, who can come in and view the domestic animal portions of our facility, and hear on-site presentations on animal rescue and care. Hands-on prevention and education activities include hands-on assistance from members of Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary who are knowledgeable in barnyard animal care and training. This can include activities such as assisting owners with trimming toenails and halter breaking, assessing the severity of behavior problems, on-site consultation to improve facilities and care, and assistance with improving facilities, i.e. repairing fences and putting up shelters. Through prevention and educational activities conducted by our members, many llamas and barnyard animals which were at one time neglected can stay with their current owners and receive proper care. Intervention activities become necessary when prevention and education fail, and the animals become abused or suffer from long-term neglect, as well as when care cannot be provided to such issues as the owner’s circumstances or the animal’s severe behavior problems. When necessary, Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary will work with local human organizations and animal control authorities to take possession of abused and neglected animals, and will take possession of animals surrendered by their owners voluntarily. The animals are then brought to the Sanctuary or transported to qualified foster homes, where they are vetted, assessed and trained, and eventually placed in pre-screened adoptive homes. Adoptive homes are periodically inspected to ensure the care of the animals, and if for any reason the care is inadequate, the animals are returned to Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary for placement elsewhere, as per the adoption contract. The wildlife rescue activities of Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary ( a.k.a. New York Wildlife Rescue Center) include educational presentations as well, both on-site during private group visits to the Sanctuary, and off-site during visits to schools and community events. Educational demonstrations and material are included in the form of posters, brochures and slide-shows, and occasionally appropriate non-releasable animals are provided by one of our licensed wildlife rehabilitators to help teach the public about wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Private tour groups to the sanctuary are given supervised tours of our domestic animal areas, and enjoy presentations on our wildlife rescue efforts. The sanctuary has private facilities, which we are currently expanding, to house injured and orphaned wildlife while they are cared for (including providing proper veterinary care). These facilities are and shall be constructed to protect the animals while preventing over-exposure to human contact, in the hopes that the wildlife can be rehabilitated and eventually released back into their natural environment. Our Board of Directors currently consists of seven licensed New York State Wildlife Rehabilitators. Several of our board members are federally licensed to rescue migratory bird species and possess non-releasable wildlife for education purposes. Several have rabies vector species training. All of our board members are actively continuing their education in many areas of wildlife rescue and conservation. In addition, our board members are all experienced in farm animal care, with many years of experience between them in the rescue and care of domestic animals. To date, and for the past number of years, Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary has been run under private funding provided by the founders, plus donations provided by the local community and internet support. The increase in need for both domestic animal and wildlife rescue, the increase in public interest, encouragement and support of our operation, and the expansion of our efforts, has led us to achieve IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt status so that we may broaden our fund-raising efforts and provide the benefit of tax exemption to our donors.
