Mission Statement
Curing Kids Cancer's mission is to fund innovative research and treatments to find cures for all childhood cancers in our lifetime.
About This Cause
Since 2005, Curing Kids Cancer’s mission to partner with pediatric hospitals across the United States to find cures for all childhood cancers has been a driving force to forge scientific breakthroughs. Our intentional, ongoing relationships with doctors and researchers, combined with the generous donations received from individuals, corporations and foundations, ensure that every child needing cancer treatment has the best chance possible to receive it and live out their dreams. When Killian Owen was diagnosed with leukemia in December 1999, his parents Clay and Grainne never imagined they would be involved in the world of pediatric cancer more than 20 years later. After numerous standard treatments failed Killian, the Owens obtained special permission to receive experimental treatment at the National Cancer Institute. The drug worked well enough to stop leukemia from multiplying for a short time, but because the medicine was experimental, Killian was unable to receive a full dose. A second generation of the drug was proving to be more effective on his cancer cells in lab testing, but unfortunately, there wasn’t enough funding to move that medicine into actual treatment for Killian. A few weeks later, Killian passed away peacefully on July 27, 2003. He was nine years old. Through the gift of Killian, we are shown what a difference one short life can make. We work in Killian's memory for children who need a cure. With the help, dedication and funding from individuals, companies, foundations and events, Curing Kids Cancer has raised more than $30 million for pediatric cancer research across the globe, and our work continues!
