About This Cause
Castro Community Benefit District (Castro CBD), established in 2005, is a non-profit 501 c(3), community-based organization. The Castro CBD is dedicated to the overall improvement of the district. The Castro CBD’s top priorities are keeping the district clean, pedestrian-friendly, economically vital, and well-cared-for. The district’s footprint includes Market St. from Octavia Street to Castro Street, South side of Market St. from Castro to Collingwood St., Castro from Market to 19th Street, the north side of 19th St. from Collingwood to Diamond, west side of Collingwood from 19th to 18th St., 18th Street from Noe to Diamond, and also includes Church from Duboce to 15th St., the west side of Guerrero from Market to Duboce, and Duboce to Market St. The Castro CBD is a leader in the community and is taking strong steps to enliven the district and to strengthen the economy through implementing a variety of programs and services. The core programs provided by the Castro Community Benefit District include: - Daily sweeping: Sweeping the sidewalks and gutters of every parcel in the district - Regular steam cleaning the sidewalks: Regularly scheduled steam cleaning and spot steam cleaning of urgent spills - Graffiti Abatement: Removal of graffiti within 48 hours of notification - Public Safety: Funds security in the district and works with the City of S.F. to improve pedestrian safety - Greening and Streetscape Improvements: Creation and maintenance of public plazas, landscaping in the public realm, streetscape projects such as funding rainbow crosswalks on Castro St., Castro History Walk and LED Celebratory lights on Castro St. - Live! In the Castro: Program which activates public places, with free, outdoor entertainment - Castro Ambassadors: The Castro Ambassadors program is a volunteer program that welcomes visitors to the Castro, providing them with maps and information and directing them to historic venues, shopping, and eateries - Castro & Upper Market Retail Strategy - Working to improve the retail climate in the district and decrease the commercial vacancy rate - Castro Cares: Dedicated to improving the quality of life for the unhoused and housed in the Castro. Castro Cares is a coalition of neighborhood groups and businesses coming together to improve the quality of life for both those living on the street and those who live in homes, work, shop, and play in the Castro/Upper Market district. We are concerned about issues such as these: • People with serious mental illness and drug addiction living on the streets • A seeming increase in mostly non-violent crime, drug dealing, and petty theft • An increase in bad behavior, public drunkenness, rowdiness, and lack of respect for the neighborhood from late-night partiers. The Castro Community Benefit District is funded through an assessment on the property that falls within the district boundaries, grants, and private donations.
