Mission Statement
Room Circus medical clowning provides laughter, wonder and joy as a therapeutic and vital component of health care. "That's the first time my child has smiled in months." - Parent Our professional medical clowns use music, physical comedy, improvisation and circus arts to transform the health care environment. Stress relief, distraction, reduction of anxiety and pain and empowerment of patients are just a few of the measurable benefits.
About This Cause
Room Circus is modelled on the national, prestigious Big Apple Circus Clown Care program that operated in Seattle Children's Hospital for eleven years until it ended due to funding and administrative issues in 2009. Many of our Room Circus clowns are veterans of New York's Clown Care program. Using a playful, interactive approach, our medical clowns use music, physical comedy, improvisation and circus arts to help transform the health care environment. Stress relief, distraction, reduction of anxiety and pain and empowerment of patients are just a few of the measurable benefits. In addition, medical clowning helps build trust between physicians and patients, especially when a patient is feeling frightened or in pain, and has been shown to have positive clinical outcomes. Room Circus clowns reach through the barriers, pull out laughter, and create a circle of trust that encompasses everyone in the room - providers, families, patients and staff. Our medical clowns, in addition to being acclaimed stage performers, are trained and experienced in the procedures, protocol and sensitivity involved in working in health care environments. We have learned to recognize and consider the physical and emotional state of each patient and adapt our performances to supply what is needed, whether it's raucous humor, a tender lullaby, or a visual spectacle. Seattle Children's Hospital is thrilled to have invited Room Circus to be part of their esteemed organization and we are honored to be there. Our goal is to expand the program within Seattle Children's Hospital and to other hospitals with pediatric services.
