About This Cause
Gertrude Press is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1998 by writer Eric Deheloy. Gertrude now holds the distinction of being the longest consecutively published queer journal. Gertrude Press has published work by nearly 300 individuals from more than 30 U.S. states and 10 countries worldwide. We serve as a springboard for artists and authors to further their professional careers, including university tenure and book publication. The premier issue of Gertrude (then titled Gertrude: A Journal of Voice and Vision) appeared in the spring of 1999—a 36-page, black and white, saddle-stitched journal. In Fall 2001 the first perfect-bound issue was published. After a year hiatus in 2016, Gertrude is emerging again, energized to do its part to promote tolerance and understanding of queer individuals in today's unstable political climate. Starting in 2017 we will be an on-line only journal to reach a broader audience. Our annual chapbooks will continue in print, each with a prestigious guest judge.
