Mission Statement
Caring for Cambodia’s philosophy is that only through education can true change occur. In addition to educating the whole child and providing the supplies needed to attend school, CFC gives its students the tools for success in life after school. Through this approach, CFC changes the lives of its students, their families, and even the surrounding communities. In addition to its renowned teacher training program that ensures a world-class education including life skills, CFC also provides its students with clean water, two nutritious meals a day, school uniforms, personal hygiene supplies, and bicycles in order to get to school. CFC gives village residents the necessary tools to change behaviors that contribute to disease and poverty.
About This Cause
Caring for Cambodia (CFC) is changing the future of Cambodia, one child at a time. Supporting over 7,000 children from preschool through high school, CFC equips students with the tools they need to lift their families out of poverty. Since we began in 2003, we have seen promising results. Healthy engaged students come to school, stay in school, and achieve positive outcomes. In fact, the Cambodian Minister of Education declared CFC schools to be the national model for K-12 education. Our schools are safe, modern, and technologically equipped. We train teachers, provide tools, and remove barriers to learning. We build Cambodian leadership to guide and sustain these schools so that generations of CFC graduates can reach their highest potential and make valuable contributions to their community. Our Programs: • Food for Thought (FFT) provides two nutritious meals a day to thousands of CFC students because a hungry child cannot learn. FFT provides over 2.5 million meals per year. • Teacher Training is how educational change in Cambodia will take root and endure. CFC trains teachers in internationally recognized best practices, changing classrooms and creating child-centered learning. • Health services like dental and vision screenings as well as a comprehensive Health Education Program reaches students, parents, and the wider community. Beginning with early lessons on teeth brushing, hand washing, and clean water, students go on to learn more complex lessons on disease and healthy practices, fitness, reproductive health, and more. • Early Childhood Education: We are a national leader in early learning. We provide early childhood education through 12 preschools and a kindergarten program. Our preschools lead the country in best practices and early enrollment. • English as a Second Language (ESL) uses contemporary teaching methods and an early start to teach students. CFC is changing the future for our students by beginning their ESL skills in Kindergarten and simultaneously building STEM knowledge. • Libraries are where young learners break the cycle of illiteracy that contributes to poverty for many families in Cambodia. CFC’s libraries encourage learners through group activities, book-borrowing, and special programs. • The Life Skills Program at CFC schools expands the Cambodian curriculum by offering a variety of subjects that build children’s skills. Students learn from teachers and volunteers about subjects like agriculture, electrical, plumbing, bike repair, leadership, art, music, sports, and more. • Girls Matter! is our Gender Equity Program that changes the lives of girls and the communities at CFC schools. In Cambodia, school enrollment for girls decreases in higher grade levels. Gender Equity education is keeping more girls in school. Girls’ lack of education correlates with ongoing poverty, lack of self-determination, and vulnerability to abuse and exploitation. CFC’s Gender Equity Program is breaking this cycle! • Our ICT and STEM programs teach students 21st Century Skills such as technical skills with computing and hardware, knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, and other sciences. These skills prepare students to work in growth sectors in Cambodia and go on to be leaders in these industries. • The Career Preparation program equips high school students with a post-graduate tool kit. We focus on helping our graduates get jobs and/or go on to higher education and training. Our Career Preparation program helps students take their new skills into the marketplace. CFC schools are some of the only ones in the country that actually prepare students to learn the skills needed to work in growth fields in Cambodia and regionally.
