About This Cause

Los Ojos de Dios mission is to transform the lives of abandoned and neglected children, one child at a time. We manage the ongoing medical and emotional challenges they face, affected by spina bifida, microcephaly, Down Syndrome, birth defects and other conditions; ultimately the reason for their abandonment. We must secure 24-hour-a-day care; comprehensive intervention to love them out of their isolation and find new hope. In response to this profound need, chief among our founding tenets is the idea that this initiative must be rooted in realistic long-term sustainability, both from a funding perspective as well as from an environmental point of view. Thus, our approack to this project is based on three key principles: Social Integration and Investment: LOdD sought to lay the foundation for a center that would partner with existing community iniciatives in order to maintain its long-term viability as well as to effectively tap resources already in play at the community, which enables us to serve as testing ground for similar efforts with the hope that the example of lives transformed here will inspire others around the world. Community Participation: In keeping with our goal to be truly community-based, LOdD draws on the talents, ingenuity, commitment and good will of the people who live and work in the community. We actively collaborate with local tradesmen - from carpenters to stone masons to farmers - to fulfill daily based needs, creating much-needed earning opportunities for them and their families. We source our caregiving staff of 70 full-time nannies/nurses from the neightborhoods inmediately adjacent to our facility, thereby impacting the livelihoods of numerous single-parent homes in our community. Through partnership with schools and civic organizations, we share our passion for social responsibility with at-risk youth via both paid and volunteer internships in all areas of our daily operations, including building maintenance, animal husbandry, therapy and office management. We also work with many industrial, commercial and corporate neighbors to continuously identify new opportunities to jointly improve our collective reality as people and as organizations. One example of this practice is when we realized that hundreds of linear feet of fiberglass ladder railing were being discarded at the local landfill, we asked the manufacturer if we could repurpose this material, which would have otherwise been non-degradable industrial waste, has becone a colorful, long-lasting material repurposed for barn doors, fences, animal enclosures, gazebos, etc. In sum, we look for innovative, real-world solutions we strive to uncover in our dealings with the community we serve, thus affirming our belief in the limitless potential of communities working together. Environmental Respect. The unforgiving desert climate is a continuous challenge. We have partnered with the College of Architecture of the local University to design and build facilities that are energy-independent, relying on wind and solar power, as well as implemented a reliable water reclamation options, through red worms, while promoting awareness of the need for conservation. Our buildings are solar passive; combine centuries-old adobe methods with optimum thermal design practices to milit our dependence on mechanical and electrical climate control, which can be shared and replicated. The proof of concept that resulted from successful operation has been refined with the construction of each additional children's building, giving us a unique vantage point in future projects. Like many non-profits, we live and die on the strength of our fundraising. Our children's lives depend on us. We must comit ourselves to building the best possible lives and most abundant futures for these children. Over the years, supporters have learned that we will refuse to depict our children as sad, vulnerable, isolated individuals to be pittied. Our children have left all that behind - that is our commitment with their present and future. Our children are well-cared for and deeply loved. They are fed nutritious, home-cooked meals, medically supervised by medical staff who devote themselves to their care as if they were their own biological children. We have become their family, their home. We believe that showing this reality - happy children surrounded by people who love them - is the truest testament to how we use the donations we receive. The wisdom of social investment has to be evident in the faces of the people whose lives our benefactors, partners, will have helped transform.
