Mission Statement
New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) was founded in 1997 to promote the creation and dissemination of thoughtful, provocative, and intelligent cinematic works for ages 3-18. NYICFF’s curation and film experiences encourage the expansion of participants’ intellectual and imaginative lives; cultivate active, discerning viewing, and stimulate lively discussion among peers, families and the film community. NYICFF is a not-for-profit organization.
About This Cause
For over 25 years, New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF)’s mission has been rooted in the belief of film as a path for young people to understand themselves and others. All programs celebrate the beauty and power of film, spark the inherent capacity of children to connect with complex, nuanced art, and encourage the creation of films that celebrate unique, diverse, and historically excluded voices. NYICFF serves children, students, families, educators, filmmakers, and media professionals through its core activities: the annual, Oscar®-qualifying NYC film festival and national tour; FilmEd, a media arts and literacy program; and an annual industry forum. At the center of our work is the annual Festival which takes place over three weekends each March in multiple neighborhoods and partner venues throughout NYC inviting families from NYC’s diverse communities and offering discounted tickets through a large network of public school partners. NYICFF presents the best new film from around the world, approx. 100 feature and short films, for ages 3-18. Work by and about people from historically underrepresented communities is prioritized giving BIPOC, LGBTQIA, neurodiverse, and disabled artists the opportunity to share their work and audiences the opportunity to see their lives reflected on screen. The films curated for the Festival serve as the cornerstone of additional programming that takes place throughout the year. The annual Festival typically draws an audience of 25,000 children, families, and filmmakers. Its curatorial focus is on artistic excellence, cultural diversity, and wide-ranging thematics, comprising 100 films. Voting and Q&As with filmmakers encourage discussion and critical thinking. The annual tour brings curated highlights to organizations across the country, often in locations geographically isolated from comprehensive, meaningful arts for young people. NYICFF’s FilmEd programs use films as a basis for customized lessons and resources for teachers. Lessons supplement existing plans and are designed to foster social-emotional learning, media literacy, and critical thinking. FilmEd serves 6,000-8,000 students annually. Of these students, approximately 70% hail from Title I public schools in communities where access to opportunities are limited by economic resources. Toward an Inclusive Future, NYICFF’s annual industry forum, was created explicitly to address the racial, geographic, and socioeconomic barriers to opportunity in the kids’ media industry. The forum hosts filmmakers, students, and other media professionals from around the world to examine the state of kids’ media production and work toward building a more equitable field on all sides of the screen.
