Mission Statement

Buckhead Heritage is a 501c3 non-profit that was established in 2006 by a group of local residents to identify, preserve, and promote Buckhead’s historic resources. The organization endeavors to foster a conscious respect within the community for its rich and diverse history, ensuring that Buckhead's historic resources are accommodated in future growth and secured for the benefit of the community.

About This Cause

Buckhead Heritage strives to document, protect, and restore select significant structures, landscapes, and artifacts in the Buckhead community of Atlanta, Georgia, to secure them for future generations. The organization also works to raise awareness of the community's history and historic resources through outreach and educational programming. In 2006, Buckhead Heritage began an extensive rehabilitation effort at Harmony Grove Cemetery at the corner of Chatham and West Paces Ferry roads. In 2009, the Society was awarded a Preservation Achievement Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation for the project. With the earliest known burial dating to 1870, the cemetery is one of the few remaining landmarks that hearken back to Buckhead’s origins as a rural farming community. Buckhead Heritage has also steadfastly advocated for the preservation of Mt. Olive Cemetery on Pharr Road, one of the last remnants of an African American community known as Macedonia Park that once thrived where Frankie Allen Park is today. In 2010, the Fulton County Superior Court barred a developer from removing graves from the site. In 2012, Buckhead Heritage advocated for the preservation of the historically significant Randolph-Lucas House, which was threatened with demolition. Buckhead Heritage subsequently worked with community partners to facilitate the relocation of the house by the principals of NewTown Partners. In addition, Buckhead Heritage serves as a local resource for landowners pursuing their personal preservation goals including listing their historic properties on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2010, Buckhead Heritage completed a National Register nomination for Sardis United Methodist Church and Cemetery on behalf of the congregation. Buckhead Heritage also sponsors educational events throughout the year in an effort to raise awareness of Buckhead’s history and historic resources. Notable programs thus far have included “The Battles for Buckhead: Nancy Creek, Moore’s Mill, Buckhead Bridge, and Peach Tree Creek" and “Buckhead’s Architectural Inheritance: Beyond Reid, Shutze, and Crook.” Buckhead Heritage also writes articles on Buckhead’s history and historic resources for publication in local newspapers and on the organization’s website.
