Mission Statement
Two by Two is a No Kill rescue that exists to give life to all abandoned, abused, stray and distressed animals without regard to age, breed, color, or medical condition, and to keep pets in their homes by offering relief to people in crisis.
About This Cause
Two by Two Rescue recognizes that the United States is part of a global animal overpopulation epidemic. It is our belief that euthanasia is not a solution to the crisis. We believe in life and are committed to rescuing any animal without regard to age, breed, color, or medical condition. Our intake is limited only by available space in an approved foster home or temporary kennels. Once our Promiseland in Pelham, Alabama, is operational, it will increase our capacity. We take seriously the axiom: “Once a Two by Two animal, always a Two by Two animal.” We have a return to rescue policy clearly stated in our adoption contract. Every adoptive person(s) agrees to return the animal to us if the animal needs to be rehomed. We work diligently with any adopter to help them keep a pet in their home by assisting with training and coaching. We are committed to giving back to the community. A small, underserved housing community in Helena, Alabama, gave birth to Two by Two Rescue. Our founder and executive director, Sonya King, teamed with another concerned citizen to leave food for the large number of stray dogs. In doing so, they gained favor with the city who had no Animal Control department. The city donated land, kennels, and food as Two by Two Rescue was incorporated and granted 501 (c) 3 status in 2006. Today Sonya and volunteers from the rescue return to that area several times each month offering food, bedding, vaccinations, and when the owner will agree, no cost spay and neuter surgeries. We are also committed to education. We teach the general public, law enforcement officers, animal control personnel, and schools. Our variety of topics include the basics of pet care, breed knowledge, humane treatment, the importance of spay and neuter, as well as local laws.
