Mission Statement
Friends of Cocoons will increase access to educational opportunities for preschool aged children through scholarship and environmental educational programs.
About This Cause
Friends of Cocoons ( FOC) was established to fund preschool scholarships and to promote environmental education. Cocooners attend school in outdoor classrooms including the barn with the horse, goat, bunny, and chickens every day all-day until Thanksgiving. They spend a minimum of two hours a day learning outside all winter until we can resume the all day outside schedule. In recent years, Friends of Cocoons has partnered with local RSU21 high school Alternative Education students to facilitate the construction of a footbridge for easier access to the back 40 Kennebunk Land Trust acres where students extensively explore in the meadow and back woods every day during the school year. Alternative Education students have also facilitated the construction of a replica Abenaki Longhouse, which has become an outdoor classroom where children learn about the Native American tribe that lived on our land many years ago. Fundraising is presentLy ongoing to complete the Abenaki village. FOC has also partnered with local Eagle Scouts to construct a “secret hideout” playhouse in the meadow where children fall in love with playing creatively outside. Before Covid, Friends of Cocoons sponsored an annual Fall Festival, Grandparents Day, and a fundraiser dinner- auction event. FOC is hoping to reinstate these events as soon as possible. 100% of all donations to FOC benefit local families and environmental education at Cocoons. The FOC board is comprised of only volunteers.
