Community & Parents for Public Schools (CPPS)

Mission Statement

CPPS educates, engages, and mobilizes parents to promote equitable, quality public schools. We train and mentor parents from under-engaged populations, preparing them to work as volunteer classroom tutors and school leaders to support stronger educational outcomes for children, particularly those who are experiencing achievement gaps. Additionally, we support and give voice to parent-led initiatives for educational improvement and connect parent/guardian communities across race, culture and language barriers to influence school and community level changes to benefit all children.

About This Cause

Mission Community & Parents for Public Schools (CPPS) educates, engages, and mobilizes parents to promote equitable quality schools in Seattle and the surrounding region. We do this through parent leadership training, local school capacity building, and community advocacy for quality neighborhood schools. We are the only organization in Seattle focused on participation from all parents and all schools. Since 2006, CPPS has been a local chapter of national Parents for Public Schools, working to educate and support parents to advocate for educational excellence. We focus on equity and opportunity for all students, parent leadership training, and community building through parent-to-parent networks. Population Served CPPS serves over 2,500 parents and community members across Seattle, delivering leadership training to parents, equipping underrepresented families with tools for engagement, and collaborating with schools. Our programs develop the leadership skills and knowledge needed for low-income and non-English-speaking families to engage and advocate for their children's success in school. Current Programs We work to change the educational outcomes and life possibilities of children who comprise the “education gap”. Our signature programs develop the leadership skills and knowledge needed for low-income, immigrant and non-English-speaking families to engage and advocate for their children's success in school. Our parent leadership development and training programs have empowered hundreds of local families across a multitude of schools, languages and cultures. Programs include: • Parent Leadership Training: Based on a proven national model, our Parent Leadership Training programs foster partnerships among the multicultural families in our school communities. CPPS has targeted both Title I schools serving substantial low income populations, as well as non-Title I schools that need to break down barriers between cultural or social groups to effectively serve all families. Parents learn how to become effective, solution-oriented advocates and partners for high-quality schools, and many go on to serve on school governing councils, in community organizations, and in their neighborhoods to improve schools. In the last three years we have trained more than 300 parents, from 25 schools, in seven languages. . • Community Forums: CPPS strives to bring community and parents together to discuss, understand, and advocate for students and schools. Our recent community forums have included opportunities to question and learn from school board candidates, understand Common Core Standards, and design successful school-community collaborations. This summer we launched the A Better Way Initiative to increase public engagement in our schools, use family and community insights and experience to inform decision-making, and change the culture around family involvement in our public schools. Through these forums CPPS has provided outreach to nearly 300 parents in the past six months alone. • Parent Volunteer Mentorship: This new program combines outreach, volunteerism and leadership development to advance parent engagement in schools. Parents from under-engaged populations receive skills training and mentorship that prepares them to work as volunteer classroom tutors and school leaders to support stronger educational outcomes for children.
