Mission Statement
The PS11 Parent Teacher Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the educational experiences of all students who attend PS11, the Purvis J. Behan Elementary School. Located in the Clinton Hill neighborhood, PS11 is a school that has seen its population grow rapidly. Currently, our school serves approximately 900 students between pre-K and 5th grade with approximately 45% of the students qualifying for free or reduced school lunch. The PTA is governed by an elected Executive Board drawn from the parent and guardian community at PS11. The PTA's mission is three-fold: 1) To raise funds and achieve financial sustainability in support of school-based academic and enrichment programming, 2) To engage and build a cohesive student and parent body, and 3) To operate and manage a six-day-a-week after school and Saturday enrichment program for students. The PS11 PTA has applied for and secured numerous grants in recent years, including the $100,000 Brooklyn Borough President's award in calendar year 2017-2018. PS11 is currently ranked #1 in District 13 for its academic achievements.
About This Cause
Purvis J. Behan Public School 11 is a public elementary school located in Clinton Hill Brooklyn that serves over 900 hundred students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Although we are a large school, we are committed to providing our children with a comprehensive child-centered curriculum that is sensitive to individual learning styles as well as cultivates individual strengths and interests. Through academic rigor, extensive access to art, music, dance, theater, foreign language, technology, physical education and hands-on science education, we strive to develop well-rounded children in an environment that is stimulating, diverse, secure and stable. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School for our academic excellence in 2014, continue to outperform state and city averages on state-wide tests and have been recognized by the State of New York for eliminating the racial achievement gap among our students. We have achieved this success not by teaching to the test but rather by molding critical thinkers, excellent writers, strong readers and instilling the skills and habits that students need to thrive in the 21st century. We believe in community, equity, and instructional excellence for all of our children and strive to provide them with the tools and opportunities to grow and succeed. We encourage exploration and critical thinking so that our children are well rounded, grounded in their sense of self, and empowered with the interpersonal and problem solving skills needed to meet any challenge. We have an incredibly engaged teaching staff, students, parents and administration who all work together to ensure our children graduate with a solid foundation needed to thrive and find fulfillment in todays world.
