About This Cause

The Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group (DRCC/TAG), now doing business as Duwamish River Community Coalition, was founded in 2001 by ten non-profit organizations representing community, environmental, social justice, health, tribal, and small business stakeholders affected by the pollution and cleanup of south Seattle’s Duwamish River. Our mission is to elevate the voice of those impacted by the Duwamish River pollution and other environmental injustices to advocate for a clean, healthy, and equitable environment for people and wildlife. We promote place-keeping and prioritize community capacity and resilience and our vision is an empowered Duwamish Valley Community thriving in a healthy and just environment. DRCC/TAG History and Work DRCC/TAG has worked closely with the affected communities in the Duwamish Valley for more than 14 years. We serve as EPA’s Community Advisory Group for the Duwamish River Superfund site as well as provide critical independent oversight of the Superfund cleanup planning process. In addition to collaborating with the community to advocate for a comprehensive, health-protective river cleanup that benefits the local community, we engage and build community capacity, leadership, and power in areas of environmental and community health. Community and environmental health priorities include air quality, green space, economic development, and at-risk youth empowerment. Current Efforts • Community Action for Clean Air: We are collaborating with multiple project partners and the community in the Duwamish Valley to understand sources of air pollution and take action to reduce residents exposure to air pollution. • Healthy River / Healthy Communities: We work to ensure the communities’ identified environmental and community health priorities are acted on by engaging with local government, project partners, and the community. • Duwamish Valley Youth Corps: We empower youth of Georgetown and South Park through a paid environmental justice-based job skills program that supports environmental and health improvement projects. • Superfund Cleanup: DRCC/TAG is part of every aspect of the Superfund cleanup, ensuring the community is informed and engaged in each part of the process. We do this by communicating regularly with EPA and other government agencies as well as implementing engaging and culturally appropriate outreach and education.
