About This Cause
PILnet has earned a reputation for its ability to marshal latent legal capacity in support of activists and civil society organizations (CSOs) who are building more just, equitable, and sustainable societies. In some cases, that means providing practical legal support for the healthy functioning of CSOs on matters such as registration, structuring/restructuring, employment or tax laws, data privacy, cybersecurity, and governance. While at first glance those examples may appear mundane, they are in fact crucial to an organization’s resilience and sustainability, especially in difficult or rapidly changing environments. PILnet also directs the specialized skills of lawyers in private practice to the programmatic work of CSOs, through legal research and analysis, including comparative legal research — a particularly fitting task for large, multinational firms — analysis or drafting of policy recommendations, and even in some cases, direct legal assistance for an organization’s clients. Lawyers sometimes assist with strategic litigation, though that remains the least common intervention. Whatever the method, PILnet is uniquely capable of helping to direct significant resources to civil society (PILnet more than triples every investment through the pro bono time and resources it deploys). Another result of PILnet’s work are the unlikely partnerships it creates between civil society and the private sector. While the value of these relationships might seem intangible, it is increasingly evident that civil society is stronger and safer when it is connected to the corporate sector, given its ever-growing social and economic influence and power.
