About This Cause

The Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County began in 2007, with its Main Ave Club (2750 Main Ave). Today the Club operates year-round with its Main Ave site, and area sites to provide its afterschool programs and full-day summer programs as well as The Club @ Bayfield. In 2023, the Club experience was provided to 1,536 children and youth. The Club served more kids per day, per week, and per year, than any other youth development organization in la Plata County. Modest or low fees (offset by need-based financial assistance) ensure the Club experience is available to all families. The Club's Formula for Impact means the Club focuses on serving the youth who need us most, providing an Outcome-Driven Club experience (the five key elements of which are a safe/positive environment [physically and emotionally], FUN, supportive relationships, opportunities & expectations, and recognition), all designed to fulfill the Club's Priority Outcomes: Academic Success (graduate from high school with a plan), Good Character & Citizenship (Be an engaged citizen you your [school] community, register to vote and model strong character), and Health Lifestyles (adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices). The Club works with area partners including the 9-R Durango School District and the Bayfield School District to make programs available at locations that best serve the needs of families throughout the Southwest Colorado area. The Club benefits from Fort Lewis College (FLC), a great employee feeder, with FLC students completing education, sociology, or exercise science internships at the Club, and upon graduation, continuing to work at the Club as part of the youth development professional team. Students apply real-time education to their work at the Club and benefit from the best-practice training required by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for all employees. The Club operates through a diverse portfolio of earned and contributed income streams. Donors (individual, business, civic, foundation and grant) welcome the opportunity to be champions for youth, by investing to support need-based financial assistance, underwriting specific programs, and/or general operating costs.
