Mission Statement
The Riverbend Community Math Center is a non-profit organization in the South Bend/Mishawaka area that started offering programs during the fall of 2006. Our mission is to promote interest and confidence in mathematics among people of all ages. With technology-related fields becoming increasingly important to our economy, people need more opportunities to learn that math can be fascinating and that it can lead to rewarding careers. Our organization provides several different types of programs including a Math and Technology Academy, Math Circles, teacher workshops, and custom events with hands-on activities.
About This Cause
Many people have had negative experiences with math or feel that it is boring or frustrating. Disinterest in math leads people to avoid classes and careers in math-related areas. The reality is that technology-related fields are the fastest growing sector in our economy, making an interest and competency in math essential for a successful school experience for children and career growth for adults. The need for this type of program in St. Joseph County cannot be overstated. If the State of Indiana is successful in its efforts to recruit more high-tech and biotechnology companies, the need for employees with advanced math backgrounds will increase significantly. Conversely, if people in Indiana acquire a higher level of training in math, science, engineering, and technology, it will be easier for Indiana to attract such companies. Currently, most children and adults in our community are not prepared to pursue careers in these areas due to a lack of understanding and confidence in mathematics. To address this need, the Riverbend Community Math Center provides several types of services in our community: • Free public outreach programs including Math Circles, Science Fair Saturdays, and Math Studio • Math enrichment programs for school and after-school groups • Training for pre-service, primary, and middle school teachers • Curriculum development for math education programs at all age levels We also network with mathematicians around the country who are interested in outreach to their communities. We have trained and mentored numerous mathematicians as part of this networking, and we participate actively in the nationwide Math Circle movement to support and expand these efforts around the county.
