Mission Statement

The Sanctuary’s Mission is to provide a “Helping Hand” for senior pets. For our residents, we are able to provide love, affection, and shelter. Many of these dogs receive medical care, such as diagnostic screenings, dental care, surgery, and medications, as needed. --- For other senior dogs, we provide a “Helping Hand” by getting the word out about their special needs, and encourage others to give them a forever home through our House with a Heart “Sanctuary of Your Own” program. Another way we help Senior and Special needs dogs is with our “K-9 Medical Miracles Grants” – by providing necessary medical care to make them adoptable from the shelters and get them into their local rescue or a new forever home. --- With the recent advent of Covid-19, we have opened a Pet Pantry to support seniors in our community with no way to get pet food for their "furry friends" The "Feed Fido & Fluffy" Pet Pantry hopes to help by providing pet food to groups who deliver food to folks unable to get out to the stores at this time. --- We provide our current residents with a comfortable, bright, and spotless home environment. They play in secure outdoor yards and spend supervised time in fenced, grassy fields on the two-acre property. Healthcare and wellness screening are ongoing, with veterinary specialists consulted when needed. Pets receive special diets, as necessary, and are fed high-quality foods and treats. --- HWAH relies on volunteers, donations, grants and wish list gifts to accomplish our primary mission of providing quality care for senior dogs and cats.

About This Cause

House with a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary is not a foster home or rescue group. They are a forever home for senior dogs and cats, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Sanctuary residents are dogs and cats who have lost their families and homes through no fault of their own. Due to their advanced age and various medical conditions, they have little chance of being adopted. But because of the wonderful work House with a Heart Pet Sanctuary does, senior and special needs pets are given a loving and caring home where they will be allowed to live out their lives in a secure, nurturing environment. Through a program called Short Term Care, special needs dogs are taken care of while their owners are away and the monies earned is used to run the Sanctuary...so when folks make donations those donations go directly to caring for the residents, for food, medical care and items that directly benefit the HWAH residents and not for Administrative or Operational expenses. Both Short Term Care dogs and the full-time residents of the sanctuary are provided with a comfortable, bright, and spotless home environment. They play in secure outdoor yards and spend supervised time in fenced, grassy fields on a two-acre property. Our Director, Sher devotes herself full-time to caring for the pets and maintaining and improving the Sanctuary. HWAH is supported by volunteers from Montgomery County and the surrounding Metro areas that walk, bathe, and care for the residents, as well as clean and maintain the house and two-acre property. As of 2021, 45 dedicated volunteers had joined the HWAH family.
