About This Cause

Values We believe that gratitude, initiative, optimism, self-control, curiosity, integrity, and grit play a central role in youth development. We deliberately and thoughtfully incorporate these core values into our program content and culture. Strategy The key to Squash Haven’s success is our multi-faceted and intensive approach to youth development. Fifth through twelfth grade team members participate in tuition-free year-round programming that includes differentiated individual tutoring, group academic enrichment, squash instruction, community service, values-based character development, exposure to a broad range of enrichment opportunities, and college preparation. Consistent with the long term goal of graduation from institutions of higher education, college-aged team members continue to receive academic, athletic, and personal advice/support, and access to internship and summer employment opportunities. Squash Haven relies on a small full time staff based at Yale whose work is complemented by the volunteer efforts of the University’s squash teams and academic volunteers. New middle school students are selected annually on the basis of their motivation and commitment and are expected to actively participate in the program through the end of college. Goals Squash Haven's short term outcome goals include the enhancement of: • Academic Performance • Athletic Performance • Character Development • Commitment • Fitness and Nutrition • Self-Confidence Squash Haven's long term outcome goals include: • Ability to make an informed choice from a range of postsecondary options • Matriculation at and graduation from institutions of higher education • Career readiness Impact In our first ten years, we have helped team members earn 18 private school scholarships, 42 national level squash championships, and $800,000 annually in renewable financial aid grants and scholarships. Team members have also given over 4800 hours of service to the New Haven community. Our first four classes of high school graduates have received 100% acceptance to four year colleges and universities. They are attending Dickinson, Hamilton, Haverford, Middlebury, Mt Holyoke, The University of Connecticut, and Yale among others. Over 95% of team members and families surveyed agree that Squash Haven has had a positive influence on their desire to do well in school, academic success, and preparation for their academic future. Over 95% of students and families also agree that the program helps students develop a sense of purpose and ambition, makes them feel good about themselves, and helps them feel optimistic about their futures.
