In Service of the Honeybee: Our consciously cultivated honeybee sanctuary promotes sustainable and biodynamic beekeeping to help restore the health and vitality of the honeybee worldwide.
About This Cause
Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary is one of the only places in the world that teaches and models what it means to be a bee sanctuary. We focus on how to care for honeybees and native pollinators in ways that honor their essential nature, and, therefore, expand their health, vitality, and longevity. In this way, we accomplish our mission in service of the honeybee. At the center of this work lies the Sanctuary itself: a 40-acre farm with 30 honeybee hives, abundant native gardens, and restorative habitats cultivated for the bees and other pollinators. Though many managed honeybee colonies are in crisis, with most beekeepers losing half of their colonies every year, hive losses at Spikenard have been modest -- an average of 10% loss for well over a decade. The bees here at the Sanctuary thrived through last winter, and have birthed 29 swarms already this spring. We promote practices to prioritize the bee's well-being and strength, knowing that these methods create safe, biodiverse landscapes for humans too. Visiting and studying at the Sanctuary has inspired hundreds of people to work in new ways on environmental issues, whether stopping toxic chemical use in their community or starting large pollinator forage projects.
