Mission Statement

The Foundation was established in December 2016 to mobilize and manage resources and facilitate the implementation of collaborative broad-based programs and initiatives. The Foundation provides a mechanism for the 1890 universities to respond to new and emerging opportunities as well as local, national and global challenges. The Foundation’s mission is to assist the 1890 universities to find resources to discover and apply innovative solutions to the compelling economic, social, health, and environmental challenges faced by our nation and the world.

About This Cause

The 1890 Universities Foundation is a 501©3 Organization representing 19 Historically Black Land Grant Universities. Located primarily in the southern and border states, these universities were established through the Second Morrill Land Grant Act of Congress in 1890 to provide educational opportunities that denied access in a segregated era. The 1890 universities have demonstrated a commitment to excellence, access to all, providing opportunities for families and communities, providing access to food, health care, and improved quality of life. After celebrating 130 years of service to this nation and the world by providing, in part, the largest pool of minorities in STEM, Agriculture, Arts, and the Humanities, the 1890 universities still lag behind in attracting financial support, competitive and matching grants from major corporate donors. To alleviate some of the challenges emanating from the issues relating to infrastructure and a critical mass of faculty at individual institutions, the leadership at the 1890 universities created The Foundation to act on behalf of all 19 as a consortium of universities, fully engaged and collaborative supporting one another to compete effectively nationally and globally.
