Mission Statement

Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue© is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization founded in 2007. We are an all volunteer organizations. 100% of our funding goes toward the cats—no one gets paid a salary. We cover the entire West Coast for many breeds and work in tandem with other Purebred Cat Breed Rescues on a National basis. Our mission is to educate pet owners, breeders, and shelters about our breeds, and to place our cats with Forever Families who will give them the proper care and love they deserve. We carefully match cats with their Forever Families by evaluating each cat's personality, temperament, and special needs. Then we determine the best fit for both the cat and the new family.

About This Cause

We have dedicated ourselves to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of purebred and other exceptional cats. The organization operates as an all-volunteer, "no-kill" animal rescue. In addition, we educate the public in the proper care of purebred cats and the importance of spaying and neutering to control the animal population. Our cats are kept and cared for by foster parents that have experience and knowledge in the special needs of Persians, Himalayans, Maine Coons, Ragdoll, Birmans, Scottish Folds, Abyssinians, and other purebred or special hybrid cats and kittens. We have contacts with all major breed rescues and are willing to facilitate the rescue of these breeds into the appropriate rescue situation. We maintain a website to make the public aware of the cats and kittens in our foster system that are available for adoption. We also cooperate with other websites with similar missions like PetFinder and Adopt a Pet. Our group obtained 501c3 status as Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue in 2007. From a core group of seven volunteers, PPCR grew until now we have several dozen members, including foster moms, transporters, web mistresses, writers, a graphic artist, a treasurer, a fundraising manager, reference checkers, and database administrators. No member of PPCR is paid a salary, so every penny donated to us goes to care for the cats we rescue. We are lucky to have, among our volunteers, individuals knowledgeable about the characteristics and needs of different breeds. For example, we have fosters who are very experienced with Persians, fosters who specialize in Abyssinians, and even fosters who are knowledgeable about hybrid breeds such as Chausies and Savannahs. We have close contacts in the cat-fancy community and often steward at cat shows. In addition to breed-specific expertise, we have volunteers with extensive experience in rehabilitating sick cats and volunteers who are skilled at socializing shy cats. Some of our fosters specialize in caring for kittens, and of those, some have the special skills required to care for a pregnant cat and provide appropriate neonatal support to a feline mom and her litter. Of course, we dream of the day when there will be many fewer cats needing rescue, but in the meantime we feel proud to be able to find homes for several hundred cats each year. Most cats come to us from shelters, some from individuals, and quite a few from breeders needing to dissolve their catteries. Inevitably, some also come to us in connection with animal-control actions against hoarders or kitten mills; we have helped in several large-scale situations involving 50 or more cats, from all over the West Coast of the United States. The majority of our cats spend their weeks or months (occasionally years) in rescue in home environments, where once they have recovered from the initial trauma of abandonment, they live lives similar to what they hope to experience in their new, forever homes. Cats requiring veterinary care receive treatment. Cats who enjoy the company of other cats have opportunities to mingle, and many have regular interaction with children—some even with dogs! Thus, we are able to give potential adopters extensive information about the personality and needs of each cat. We do tend to have more cats in need than we have foster homes available, however, so we also have cats in residence at an innovative boarding facility in Santa Cruz, where they live in artfully decorated rooms, not in cages or institutional enclosures. People sometimes ask why we rescue mostly purebred cats. The answer is not that they are fancier and hence somehow more deserving than other homeless cats. The fact is that different breeds of cat can have unique care requirements--such as the grooming needs of Persians--or for other reasons do notably poorly in shelter environments. Although occasionally one of our volunteers discovers a cat while visiting a shelter, the usual procedure is for shelters to approach us, asking us to help with cats we are in a better position to serve.
