Mission Statement

The Bob Moog Foundation's mission is to ignite creativity through the intersection of science, music, and innovation. Like our namesake, we educate and inspire people through sonic exploration. Our three main projects are Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, a ten-week innovative science curriculum through which we teach children the science of sound through experiential music-based activities, the preservation of the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, through which we protect, preserve, and share a vast archive of materials, including prototypes, schematics, photos, correspondence, rare drawings, vintage catalogs, notes, vintage catalogs, etc., that trace the history of electronic music, and the Moogseum, and interactive facility located in Asheville, North Carolina, which brings Bob Moog's life and legacy alive through experiential exhibits accessible to all age and knowledge levels.

About This Cause

Dr. Bob Moog was an innovator in the world of electronic music. For more than 50 years, he worked to expand the boundaries of sonic expression, and his legacy has forever impacted the lives of musicians and music lovers around the globe. The invention of the Moog synthesizer in 1964 revolutionized almost every genre of music, offering performers new sonic possibilities with which to express their creativity. At the Bob Moog Foundation, we inspire future generations through the genius of Dr. Bob Moog’s legendary work. Where he provided innovative new voices to musicians, the Foundation provides innovative and effective educational opportunities to children — youth who will become tomorrow’s generation of thinkers and problem solvers. The mission of the Bob Moog Foundation is to honor Bob Moog’s pioneering legacy by igniting creativity through the intersection of music, science, and innovation. Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool is an experiential, 10-week second grade science curriculum. We teach students the physics of sound (vibrations, sound waves, electricity as a generator for sound, and more) using acoustic and electronic instruments such as the theremin, accompanied by custom educational materials developed by our educational team. Students learn how to become scientific observers using examples from Dr. Bob’s own science notebooks, while participating schools fulfill STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) academic requirements. With the success and rapid growth of our current program, and the nationwide demand for innovative, experiential learning, our goal is to expand Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool nationwide. We empower teachers to understand and teach the physics of sound. We ignite students to be creative thinkers and innovators like Dr. Bob Moog. “I was so impressed with how much my daughter learned from Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool. Talking to her about pitch and volume and the sound wave wiggles was so much fun. She was even teaching her three-year-old brother about sound and he was understanding!” — Kristin Keliher, Parent Dr. Bob's SoundSchool began as a pilot program in 8 classrooms in our local area. It met with such enormous success that we quickly grew to 32 classrooms in two different school districts, and then to 55 classrooms in three schools districts, including one rural, high-need community. The results continue to be extremely encouraging as students engage with science in a new way, retain what they learn, and are able to apply their knowledge to novel situations far beyond what the control group was able to achieve. Due to the success of the program, we have been inspired to expand the program throughout the United States. With the proper support, our first area of expansion will be Los Angeles, followed by Boston and Houston, and many other major cities. With the support of donors, we are working toward this goal. $500 provides Dr. Bob's SoundSchool to 10 children $1,0000 provides Dr. Bob's SoundSchool to an entire classroom $5,000 provides Dr. Bob's SoundSchool five classrooms Archive Preservation Initiative - Preserving history to effect the future The Bob Moog Foundation Archive offers a unique glimpse into electronic music history. We are working to preserve the entirety of this invaluable, one-of-a-kind collection, which includes vintage instruments, breadboard prototypes, , schematics, project notes, and more. We are the proud recipients of two preservation grants from the GRAMMY Foundation. Our work has drawn the attention of major museums and educational centers around the world. Every year, we exhibit archival materials at festivals, in our own MiniMoogseum, online, and in independent museums, exposing thousands of people to the innovative work of Dr. Bob Moog. With your help we can expand our efforts and achieve our goals for the archives, which include: • Collaborating with other hosts to display select archive materials • Creating traveling exhibits for museums and science centers • Opening a storefront beta museum in Asheville, North Carolina • Creating a full-scale museum, or “Moogseum,” in Asheville, North Carolina “Dr. Moog left behind a highly unique dual legacy of creative and technical genius. The Moog synthesizer is known the world over as a ground-breaking instrument that revolutionized music.” — Terry Stewart, President, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Contact us at info@moogfoundation.org for more information.
