Mission Statement
Tusubira - We Have Hope works with NGOs in rural villages of Uganda to address issues that perpetuate poverty by providing education and community development programs. We do this because every youth deserves an opportunity to thrive, to become a contributing member of a healthy and productive community, and to be free from extreme poverty.
About This Cause
Since 2010, Tusubira has funded secondary school (high school) scholarships to orphaned and vulnerable students, particularly girls, in rural eastern Uganda. We support secondary school education because youth in Uganda's rural communities have such limited access to secondary education that only 14% continue to secondary school, yet this level of education is a key determinant of future employment and economic opportunity, thus it is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. In partnership with our local partner Child Empowerment Programme-Uganda (CEP-Uganda), we established YANA Community High School (CHS) in 2017 to address this critical gap by increasing access to secondary education (high school) for youth in Nawanende village, Kamuli district. Now in its fourth year of operation, YANA CHS has over 200 students and 15 teachers, and is regarded as a high quality, low-cost education option for local secondary students. YANA CHS' approach focuses on leadership, community-building, participation, and compassion. Female students are disproportionately less able to complete secondary school, due to family pressure to do household work and teen marriage or pregnancy. If a girl student becomes pregnant, they are compelled to drop out of school for good. To address the needs of young women who had fallen through cracks in the secondary school system, Tusubira and CEP-Uganda launched YANA vocational training centre in 2018 to offer skills-based programs to equip young women with marketable skills and increased self-confidence. Offering a tailoring course, YANA has now graduated two cohorts and the results show that graduates are able to find employment and to sell their clothing, thereby providing for their families and increasing their autonomy. Through input of our community partners, we fund impactful projects including health initiatives, special education needs, and infrastructure assets which improve quality of life and reduce extreme poverty in their rural setting. During the time of COVID-19, YANA CHS and vocational training centre were closed. However, CEP-Uganda serves as a critical voice for community outreach and education during this time and is reviewing options for how to best support community health, welfare, and education initiatives.
