Mission Statement
Mali Health improves maternal and child health by supporting women, communities, and the community health system to develop local solutions that ensure every mother and child has access to high-quality primary care.
About This Cause
Since 2006, Mali Health has partnered with underserved communities in Mali to implement locally-designed solutions that improve health. We primarily serve peri-urban communities, where families live in informal settlements on less than $1.50 per person per day, which means they struggle to access basic primary healthcare. Today, we collaborate with partners in seventeen peri-urban communities across Bamako, serving tens of thousands of families each year. Mali Health prioritizes community participation in our shared work, convening residents to identify challenges and to develop solutions built on the community’s assets. We use integrated strategies that directly address increasing access to quality healthcare, while also increasing community capacity to address underlying social determinants of health. We only pursue approaches that can be led by women and communities and can become lasting solutions. We use four strategies to help marginalized women and communities overcome the barriers they face by strengthening the resources they already have: 1) Community health workers: we train, equip, employ and support women from peri-urban communities to become leaders in providing life-saving health information and care to mothers in their community. This program serves over 2,000 children and their families annually. 2) Women-led health financing: sharing health information and building financial skills through health savings groups, livelihoods and income-generating activity trainings, and business and cooperative management skills. This program serves over 6,300 women. 3) Quality and governance improvements: ensuring the availability of quality health care by listening and responding to women’s needs and ensuring that women are represented in health center leadership. This program serves 8 community health centers who serve thousands of women annually. 4) Health promotion/community outreach: ensuring that all women have access to reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health (RMNCH) information to make informed decisions about their health and their families. This program reaches thousands of women annually.
