Mission Statement
POST’s mission is to strive to encourage environmental awareness, leadership, diversity, self-confidence, and knowledge of the outdoors through peer-to-peer learning. We help to build a sense of community by giving students a chance to learn, experience, and connect with each other in beautiful wilderness settings around the northwest. The curriculum on our trips is developed and implemented by the student leaders with guidance from experts in the community. Our trips range in activity from rock climbing to snow camping, basic survival skills to kayaking, and hiking to alpine climbing. Our goal is to allow ALL interested students the opportunity to attend our trips.
About This Cause
POST 84 is a student-led outdoor education program based out of Seattle, WA. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit and one of the largest student run organizations in Washington, with over 350 members. POST trips offer students from all backgrounds the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor activities, whether for the first time or the hundredth. MISSION We strive to encourage environmental awareness, leadership, diversity, self-confidence, and knowledge of the outdoors. We help to build a sense of community, which may not otherwise be found in an urban environment. HISTORY POST 84 began in 1984 when Ken Morrison, an ambitious science teacher at Garfield High School, was encouraged to bring students out to Cleveland High School Memorial Forest to participate in hands-on learning. Since then, the program has provided outdoor educational experiences for over 8,000 students from Garfield High School. Over the years students assumed more and more of the responsibility for running and managing the program. Eventually, POST 84 renamed itself “POST” and became defined as a student run program, with a classroom advisor and outdoor advisor. In 38 years, POST has developed a student leadership structure that is innovative and inspiring to its student participants. ACTIVITIES POST runs a variety of trips in the greater Seattle area ranging from rock climbing to snow camping. To see our current trips, visit the Trips page. All trips are entirely planned and run by student staff, with a number of adult board members and chaperones who supervise the activities. OVERSIGHT Our Executive Committee of student staff oversee and run most of our trips, ultimately making all of the decisions for POST with some input from the community board. The Board President, Scott MacGowan, has a strong background in outdoor education and leadership and has kept the program thriving for many years. SCHOLARSHIPS POST strives to accommodate the needs of all students. We have scholarships opportunities for all trips so that all students may participate in our program. We also have a large inventory of gear which are available for students to borrow for trips. To continue running a successful program and creating space for all interested students on trips, POST relies on donations and funding from outdoor organizations in addition to its revenue from trip fees.
