Mission Statement
Youth Community Service engages young people from diverse local communities in meaningful service-based learning. YCS students build leadership and life skills, empathy for the needs of others, and a sense of connectedness, purpose and efficacy, while making a positive difference in the lives of those around them. At Youth Community Service, we believe that every young person with a heart full of service has a future of meaning and purpose.
About This Cause
Within our San Francisco Bay Area region, many of our young people lack a sense of connectedness and direction. Service-based programming creates a sense of interwoven destinies, encourages learning, and builds purpose. Strategies & Programs 1. Serve: Foster a life-long commitment to service by connecting youth with meaningful service opportunities 2. Nurture: Nurture healthy transitions for pre-teens as they gain confidence and self-awareness, build empathy for others, and realize they can make a difference. 3. Engage: Engage youth with our partner organizations and local public schools to build awareness of community issues and to work side by side with role models for constructive action. 4. Mentor: Mentor youth from diverse communities to develop moral and civic responsibility through successful event-planning and team-building activity. 5. Teach: Train educators, other adults and youth leaders in effective service-learning and STEM strategies to actively engage youth with powerful hands-on learning. 6. Promote: Promote our programs with a variety of media to reach our youth and share available opportunities. 7. Invest: Invest financially and in-kind with our time and talents to have the broadest and most appropriate reach in our communities. Anticipated Changes 1. Purpose: Youth will discover a sense of purpose that motivates and guides their academic and life choices. With purpose, youth balance the ethic of personal success with the ethic of service to others. 2. Civic Engagement: Youth will be knowledgeable about community issues and ways to address them, and will acquire skills for public service as engaged citizens, change makers and leaders. 3. Connectedness: Youth will experience increased personal and trusting connections to adults and peers in their community. 4. Equity: Youth who have been underserved will receive the learning support and gain academic skills to increase graduation rates. 5. Diversity: Youth will feel inspired by diversity, will empathize with common values, and share a personal commitment to overcome stereotypes and inequity. Values & Guiding Principles 1. Build on Assets: We begin the strengths of our young people when designing constructive youth development strategies. 2.
