Mission Statement
Afghanistan American Friendship Foundation's mission is to partner with Afghan communities to provide essential programs that empower Afghans in northern Afghanistan to live with worth, value, and dignity. "We Build Hope" is a mission we make a reality by partnering with Afghan communities to collaborate on projects that respond to the need for more educational opportunities for girls in Afghanistan and strengthen and enhance infrastructure so communities have access to clean water, educational facilities, and food security. Our programs support the human rights of Afghans, reduce the number of unnecessary hardships, and empower Afghans to enhance their lives and communities.
About This Cause
Afghanistan American Friendship Foundation (AAFF) was founded in 2007 and is registered in the United States with a 501(c)(3) status. AAFF is registered in Afghanistan and the field office is in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. All AAFF’s projects are located in northern Afghanistan. AAFF’s Director and Board of Directors are Americans who employ an all Afghan project staff. AAFF values partnership with Afghan communities and operates with cultural sensitivity to empower Afghans to strengthen their nation. AAFF has worked in the education sector in Afghanistan since 2007 specifically serving women and girls. In that time AAFF has built 12 schools including an innovative school which was completed in 2015. Since 2011, AAFF has implemented five computer training centers within public schools that have served Afghan girls in grades 5-12. Many Afghan girls do not have access to technology and lack basic knowledge of computer skills. Since the program's inception, we have trained over 7,500 girls in basic computer courses and coding. We continue to operate two of the computer centers that have the capacity to train 400 Afghan girls a year. AAFF's courses are taught by qualified female Afghan teachers that are equipping the next generation of girls valuable computer skills that will enhance their education and equip them for a brighter future. Since 2007, AAFF has completed 480 wells in communities in northern Afghanistan. Most Afghans must collect water outside their homes requiring long walks carrying heavy containers in extreme temperatures. Often the nearest water source, such as a shallow well or stream, could be contaminated or polluted. About half of the deaths of Afghan children under the age of 5 are from water-born diseases. Children often collect water for their families. This time consuming responsibility can keep children from attending school and puts girls at risk of violence on the long walk. AAFF partners with Afghan communities to provide wells and water storage systems to Afghan communities that lack access to clean water. Hand pump wells are placed within communities that are a short walking distance from most homes. Each well serves several hundred families, which means these families have easily accessible, clean water that positively impacts their health and wellbeing. AAFF also is responding to the need of food insecurity in Afghanistan. Over 90% of Afghan households are not getting enough to eat due to rising food prices, a high unemployment rate, decrease in workplace wages, lower crop production due to drought and natural disasters, and sanctions limiting imports. The World Food Program's Executive Director recently stated that Afghanistan is facing the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth. It's estimated that 55% of the population, over 22 million people, are at crisis level hunger. AAFF partners with Afghan communities to identify the most vulnerable Afghan families suffering from food insecurity. We meet with each of the families to understand their needs. Approved families receive a month's worth of staple food supplies that typically supports a family of 7 for a month. The supplies typically include 50 kg of flour, 5kg of oil, 14 kg of rice, 7 kg of beans, 7 kg of lentils, 7 kg of sugar, 2 kg of salt, 2 kg of tomato paste or pasta, 1 package of matches, and 5 kg of liquid soap. In 2022, we supported over 6,000 Afghans with a month's supply of staple food items.
