Mission Statement

New York Theatre Barn is a Manhattan-based non-profit theatre company that serves as an inclusive home for original culture shifting musicals during incubation. Since 2007, New York Theatre Barn has been providing space, funding, and a safe opportunity to experiment in front of live audiences often for the first time. NYTB serves underrepresented artists and audiences in their commitment to anti-racist, equity, and anti-oppression ideologies while adopting a decolonial approach to theatre making and practice. For artists, the support of NYTB means investment in process. For audiences, NYTB offers a glimpse inside the blueprint of an original musical being developed in real time by living writers. NYTB believes that there is no formula for musical theatre, except authenticity.

About This Cause

For artists, the support of New York Theatre Barn means investment in process. For audiences, we offer a glimpse inside the blueprint of an original musical being developed in real time. Each original musical’s intention, content and journey are unique and extraordinary to the storytellers who create them. We believe that there is no formula for musical theatre development, except authenticity. Stories shape how we see ourselves and those around us. In our unique position, we have the power to not only uplift and inspire, but also to champion the spectrum of voices in our world. Representation and accessibility are important to us, so we are focused on the stories that need to be seen and whom those stories serve. With intention, we are actively excited to seek out, curate and amplify the work of hundreds of underrepresented artists, including those who are BIPOC, disabled, queer, women, under 18, over 60, and are actively expanding who has access to musical theatre developmental opportunities. In our commitment to accessibility and inclusion, we are dedicated to including ASL interpreters for live performances, among other disability inclusion practices. Our 4 innovative core programming platforms allow us to incubate original musicals in front of live audiences. This enables writers, directors, choreographers, and producers to experiment and develop each culture shifting story through a unique incubatory process. Our core programs include: -our award-winning New Works Series - pre-premieres of original musicals presented to a live and virtual audience, and the series is the impetus for our podcast from Broadway Podcast Network The Musicals of Tomorrow -our Choreography Lab - the only platform where choreographers and writers collaborate on movement for new musicals during incubation, and often putting new musicals on their feet for the first time -unique Residency opportunities evolve the projects we incubate in our New Works Series and Choreography Lab which result in readings, workshops, inventive developmental productions, and a new summer residency on Fire Island called Barn on Fire for 3 musicals in development (a collaboration with the Fire Island Pines Arts Project), bringing them closer to production. -Theatre Barn Records - an imprint of Broadway Records and dedicated to making musical theatre development the most accessible that it’s ever been both for artists and audiences.
