About This Cause

From Tibet to India by the United States to global Changes in the world in your mind In 2006, Lama Tsewang Rinpoche founded Danang Foundation, a nonprofit organization established and incorporated in New York City. Its aim is to provide support for the charitable projects Tsewang Rinpoche had previously began in Tibet and at the same time, to connect people to pursue new efforts across borders. In his nine years as abbot of Nenang Monastery, Tsewang Rinpoche engaged in a variety a Dharmic and charitable projects, to benefit both the Sangha and lay communities. However, in 1999, these projects came to a standstill when Tsewang Rinpoche left Tibet to escort the 17th HH Karmapa to India. After Tsewang Rinpoche settled down in America, in 2006, he found the circumstances conducive to set up a foundation to continue these Dharmic and charitable efforts from afar. Thus, Danang Foundation was established. Danang Foundation is a Buddhist organization, built on the principle to benefit others, with a focus on five areas: providing education, alleviating poverty, providing medical care, preserving culture and conserving the environment. Till date, the foundation: • Has provided for (and is currently still providing) education for more than 1000 students in the Himalayan areas. • Has funded the Chinese language classes at the college for Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarah, Dharamsala, India, a college under the Buddhist Institute of Dialectics, since 2011. • Provides for the education of some 40 monks in Bhutan. • Annually subsidizes the medical expenses of some 480 monks in India, who are over 60 years old. • Continues to provide monthly medical trucks to rural Himalayan areas, so that more than 250 patients can receive free medical attention. This effort has begun as early as 2006. • Has established Tibetan Buddhist Center (TBC) in 2010, in Flushing, New York. The center adopts a non-sectarian approach, and invites respected masters of all lineages to expound teaching and bestow empowerments. TBC also holds weekly practices of various Sadhanas in accordance with Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and engages students in the three methods of listening, contemplation, and meditation. At present, students are provided with practice texts in Tibetan, English and Chinese, and taught the use of various Tibetan Buddhist ritual instruments. • Has established Danang Publications in 2011. Danang Publications has translated more than 30 texts and practice texts into Chinese and English, for the use of students at Kagyu monasteries and centers all over the world. The translation team has also translated several texts of biographies and instructions of great masters - these are currently awaiting publication. • Has established Danang Library in 2014. Apart from the complete Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist cannon, the library also houses texts and teachings in Tibetan, English and Chinese from all four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The library also collects ancient Buddhist texts on the verge of being lost, arranges for learned Khenpos and Archaryas to assist in its editing and preservation, and will eventually send copies to major monasteries. Currently, the library is in the process of setting up its electronic branch. This will be launched in the near future, for the benefit of readers and researchers all over the world. • Has remained non-sectarian, as when it first started. The Foundation regularly requests great masters for teachings on behalf of all devotees, and holds larger-scale Dharma events least twice annually. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, the foundation organized for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness the Karmapa, and Guru Vajradhara 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa, respectively, to give public teachings and empowerments in New York City. • The foundation’s philanthropic efforts crosses national boundaries, transcends ethnicity and religions, and finds its way to reach parts of the world where there are suffering (such as Taiwan, Yushu/China and Nepal, where earthquakes saw serious devastation). At the earliest notice, the foundation tries its best to invest labor, material and financial resources into providing aid. The foundation also works with local food banks and other religious organizations in the United States to provide food aid to the needy. Tsewang Rinpoche regards himself as a servant to sentient beings, and hopes that all will use diligence in their practice in their practice, fulfill the benefitting of self and others, and swiftly attain the fruits of enlightenment.
