A hub for healing community, social action, and creative collaboration The Refuge is deeply dedicated to centering those who fall through the cracks of life and faith, living out our shared values of presence, engagement, transformation, welcome, creativity, and celebration in tangible ways, non-hierarchical team leadership, and collaborating with community partners because we are always better together.
About This Cause
The Refuge is a hub for healing community dedicated to serving people on the margins in the North Denver area. We are a place of "refuge" for people in need in the wider community, and partner with local government agencies, faith communities, and non-profit organizations to meet tangible needs. The Refuge Cafe is cornerstone to the work of The Refuge, and provides free lunch, coffee, advocacy, personal care items and supplemental food, in addition to a safe place to rest three days a week for people experiencing homelessness and housing instability as well as people with disabilities, single moms, and anyone in need of a free place to gather hope and resources. Many local agencies, both government and non-profit, send people to The Refuge Cafe regularly to access resources and break down barriers to healing and growth. During The Refuge Cafe we have several local agencies who bring their representatives there to create greater access to clients for mental health care, employment support, and public health education. In 2020 we were able to add a shower program which allows for people of all ages in need of a shower to get one for free and with dignity. In addition to the Refuge Cafe, we also offer workshops, classes, 12 step recovery groups, a single moms group, tutoring program, and special events centered on healing and transformation. We make all of these gatherings free and accessible to the wider community and all are centered around social justice, community development, and mental health care issues. Other regular gatherings include a book pub, yoga, houses of refuge, kids special events, a dinner church gathering, and a contemplative hiking group. Anytime The Refuge is open we have a Personal Care Cabinet that people in need can access to get items that are unavailable at food banks such as toilet paper, hygiene products, diapers, and more as well a supplemental food pantry without zip code requirements. Restoring dignity where it's been lost is one of our highest values.
